New 1997 Maxima Gremlins

I'm not sure how much you guys will be able to help me on these issues, but here are a few problems I found with my new used Maxima.

The tape player doesn't work (stock HU, not Bose), it shows a "tape err" on the screen and I can't insert casettes, it seems like the little drive wheel (inside the casette slot) just sticks up and gets in the way of the casette.

The front speakers on the door make really annoying vibrating noises. They're the ones near the feet, the big speakers. Whenever there's a little bit of base, they just vibrate and it make the car feel really cheap. I don't think it's any plastic trim pieces shaking because I've been trying to isolate the noise by holding certain trim pieces tight...the vibrating/crackling seems to be coming from the speakers themselves.

My O/D switch doesn't seem to work, when I start the engine, the O/D light flashes on, but when I actually try to turn O/D off, the light doesn't light up.

AND....the car's fuel economy doesn't seem to be too good, a quarter of a tank got me about 60 miles... The engine feels nice and strong and actually in most situations runs under 2,000 rpm. It idles at about 550 rpm, but it's a little rough. When I shift it into neutral, it becomes instantly smooth. Don't get me wrong, it's just a little rough, but is this something I should worry about?

So should I take it to a Nissan garage to have all the things checked out? Or are these things stuff I can fix myself?

1. Get an aftermarket CD player.
2. Replace your speakers because the cones are ripped.
3. Check to see if you have any codes.

Only problem is the Maxima is that it needs a double DIN, right? Those thingies are expensive....and I need the casette player for my iPOD connection thingy.

I guess I'll buy some nice aftermarket speakers though. No problem there.

I got a single DIN pioneer and a dash kit that gives you a compartment below the radio as storage. I also got the AUX input kit for the head unit and wired it into the storage compartment. So that gives me a single DIN head unit with a set of RCA jacks below it for my mp3 player. much better quality then going through a tape adapter and a lot more convenient. (plus the headunit is mp3 compatible if i just want to burn CD's instead of using the player)

Great! That sounds like exactly what I need.

I was hoping my first modifications to my Maxima would be performance, but I guess I have to fix this little thing first. I'm still going to try to fix the cassette player because I'd rather have a stock HU than anything remotely flashy, I have to park on the streets in a pretty rough neighborhood.

:ats wallet::

I'm a 17 year old high school senior with LIMITED financial means. I've just learned how much owning a car costs and it brings me to tears. I make about 100 dollars a week at my part time CVS job and it's not nearly enough to feed it. I'm paying for everything except the car itself, so I'm covering gas, insurance, repairs, mods....

I'm considering a cheapo H/U with an auxillary line in a pair of 50 dollar pioneer speakers to replace the farting speakers.

But I'd so rather just fix the damn stock head unit...I might do the unthinkable and visit a Nissan dealer. It's going to be embarassing...going to a dealer because my tape player is broken, that's like going to a dealer because my windshield wiper fluid ran out.

I was about to agree with you, and advise not to get an aftermarket system, but then I realized you don't have the Bose option. I have the Bose system in mine, and the last thing I want is an aftermarket system. Your speakers are probably blown because the previous owner thought he could jam to a Dr. Dre instrumental at the highest volume...get those things replaced. I know you'll probably get aftermarket speakers, but in case the stealership tries to push you some stock ones, tell them to f!ck off.

I heard if your OD light blinks, you gotta do some kind of transmisson diagnostic. I think its pretty similar to pulling codes from the ECU. Check the FAQs.
