so i just rebuilt my tranny and also put in a new clutch while i was at it and things are going much smoother now. long gone is the ear splitting whine the bad throw out bearing was making, good riddance. but i have noticed something that i thought would change post repair. before i got the new tranny and clutch i had a lot of trouble getting the car in gear, especially first and rev, but i just dismissed this as a symptom of the known problems that i was having. but now after the car has been "fixed" im still having the same difficulty with getting in gears. shouldnt it be smoother now with all the new parts, or is it normal for the max to have a very notchy shifter?


i was thinking about replacing the tranny oil with some redline mt-90 in an attempt to improve the shifter feel if it doesnt clear up. and if all else fails i might just invest in a b&m.

 

When was the last time the transaxle fluid was changed? I find it hard to believe that you didn't replace it when you rebuilt the tranny and replaced the clutch. Just make sure you use GL4 80W90 (or 75W90). Do not use GL4 or anything labelled GL4/GL5.

ONLY USE GL-5...and if a place tells you different, Walk out !!!

Order some Amsoil or Redline Mt-90 and put that in the trans. Were the Syncroes replaced when you did the rebuild ? how about the bearings ? did you shim them properly ?

After the new Synthetic Gear Oil is put in, and it still doesnt help, make sure your shifter linkage isnt Binding up. Also dont get a short shifter, it will make it worse..

Typo. I meant do NOT use GL5. It will eat the soft metal bushings in the tranny.

 

I will attest to the short shifter statement. When I switched to Redline, the shifting was a dream. The notchiness (for 1st and R) subsided almost entirely. Then I installed my short shifter. While I LOVE the sts, it does make it a PITA to shift to 1st or R. I have to double clutch it normally for those two gears.

 

GL-5 should be fine.

Notchiness going into rev is normal, simply select N, clutch out/in, and try R again. This happens in all manual transmission designs.

Notichiness going into first at a stop is not quite normal. You should never push into 1st while moving, so if it's notchy selecting 1st on a roll it's because you're not supposed to do it.
