Wagon Performance

Hi everyone. Was wondering for all of you who own 1st and 2nd generation wagons, how would you relate their performance (ie acceleration, handling, etc) compared to the sedans? I know that they're slightly heavier than the sedans, but does it hinder them in any way? Also, if you had a choice between the sedan and wagon, would you still choose the wagon or switch? Thanks a lot for any input.

I loved my wagon, but given a chance to get another, I'd likely go with a sedan - but only for one reason...finding certain wagon only parts has proven to be a royal PITA...but as for performance, I think they are pretty much on par with the sedans - not far behind...the extra weight is in a good location, helping to balance the weight distribution evenly...

Bela, Your wagon has leaf springs at the rear, right? My '84 has coils, and links, so probably rides a little softer, and a little more squirly on turns than yours.

Max Wagon, I just looked up the maximas in a book at the library, and the sedan is 90 lbs heavier than the wagon! Earl

That seems a little odd...I know there is more technically more metal in the sedan, there is a LOT more glass in the wagon...

But overall, my wagon was great...the independent rear suspension, 4 wheel discs, etc...I just wish it had been a 5-speed, with more supportive seats...I wasn't too fond of the tufted GXE seats...

It embarrassed many trucks, and even a few sport coupes around here...it even made a SVT Mustang look stupid (more like the driver, as it was obvious he had no idea how to drive it, or he would've handed me my a$$ on a platter...

As it sits now, the 91 Mazda 626 I replaced it with is almost 900 lbs lighter, making the 5-speed and the 118 HP 4-cyl a pretty even match...the 4-cyl engine is very torquey, considering it's essentially a truck engine, but it does lack the low-end grunt of the VG...I have to hit 3k RPM to really benefit from it...

It's the live rear axle:} The 81s and 82s had the leaf springs. Lol, you're probably right
