Looking to get new brakes, need advice!

I've got a '96 GXE that was previously owned by my Grandpa. I think he took it to Big-O and had P.O.S. rotors and pads put on, because they are all rusted and let out an ear-piercing squeal everytime I hit the brakes. I can't handle it any longer so I'm probably going to get new pads and rotors. Since I'm going to replace them, I figured I might as well get some slotted rotors and nice pads. Anyone have any suggestions of what I should go with? I don't really want to spend more than around $500. Thanks in advance for any feedback!

It depends if you get them plated or not. If you get plated (usally zinc) rotors then they will only rust where the pad contacts the rotor and only if the car is left sitting for a long time. Once you start driving it again the rust goes away. The rest of the rotor stays nice and shiny/new looking.

Check in the Group Deals forum for Automax_95 (i think) He has a group deal on rotors/pads.

NO, I would go ahead and get the plating if you can, unless you LIKE rust... There are plated rotors on most higher end vehicles from the factory (ex. lexus, mercedes, etc.)

Check out www.irotors.com. They also sell kits on ebay (pads, rotors, ss lines) for all 4 wheels. Zinc plating is also available, as well as drill/slotting.

You could always read the stickies for this information or check the group deal section for good deals.
