So Tilley threw in a full 2001 engine in my 1996 since mine was dead.....good results
Well after some 9 hours of working, Tilley got my full 2001 engine to run. It's only got 23,000 miles on it. It pretty much ran perfectly out of the box after Tilley fixed the IACV he fabbed up.
I started taking apart my old engine while Tilley was installing the new one, and learned how to take apart our engine. In pretty much every part of the engine we noticed a good amount of dirt/buildup. After we got the heads off I checked the valves and cylinder of #3 because it's the cylinder that lost compression. #3 didn't look any different than the others, however on the top of all cylinders there was a layer of carbon buildup. I decided to stop going any further after we broke the same tool 3 times...
So on the test drive I noticed the car had more low-end and top-end than my previous MEVI/JWT combo (still have the ECU). It feels like there's a good amount more top-end, and it feels great. My results pretty much confirm the dyno comparison someone did a while ago between the manifolds.
I'll have pics, vids, dyno, and track results coming soon. I haven't tried to spray yet however. I can't wait to dyno and get to the track. It's nice to have a car with all 6 cylinders working perfectly. I figure my car has somewhere around 250 crank HP now
On a side note....somehow during the swap something happened to my stereo (we did nothing in the cabin)...now only my rear speakers work, and the fronts and subs don't. My setup has been tinkered with since things keep breaking, and I think the HU is powering the front speakers, and the amp is doing the rears and subs, but I could be mistaken. I've messed with all the settings on the HU, but it doesn't change anything.
My brakes also feel very stiff, and when braking I actually got scared a few times driving home. The initial press of the pedal is stiff, and almost feels like it does when ABS is kicking in, and I felt like it didn't brake well at all. After the initial inch or so, it feels pretty normal, and stops more normally. When I hit the brakes at 80, it took longer than normal to bite down....sorry I can't describe it better.
Anyways....I've been up for 20 hours and have driven for 5 of them....I'm beat.
Big thanks to Tilley for putting so much time into my car and for working until 10 PM, and still giving me a great price. Not to mention actually doing the work and figuring all the little things out. He's a great guy to work with. I can't wait until I have to go back to him for some other reason, I'll be prepared
I'm sure I forgot some things....I'll add tomorrow....

DE-K's rule
IMO 3.5 is more worth it IMO (and you can use the 00 VI for its powerband if you want) but it's also more work. De-Ks rule though. Smoothest 3.0 ever. That dyno curve is super flat.
It did need some tinkering, but not nearly what a 3.5 would need. Tilley fabbed up a new IACV, and had to do some things to the TB, but otherwise it was pretty standard.
Tilley found my engine with 23k for $700. He said 3.5's cost about 200-300 more, and the amount of labor involved is at least double.

another satisfied customer ehh tilley
i swear if u knew how to do the swap back in october, i would have been a DE-K owner as well....now i am but its not the same
one of these days we need to have a big meet at tilley's shop where he can do small installs and people just chill.
oh yea tilley, i'm going to need another one of those dvd's. Someone stole mine

no point in swapping a 5th gen 3.0 motor if you're not going to put in the VI.
