my brakes are slipping?

Its been happening for awhile, and sometimes worse than others. But basically when i press the brake pedal half way (or more, the more the worse the problem) when going anywhere from 20 + mph it groans and i kind of feel this clicking sound as if its slipping and catching but keeps slipping. The car feels like its not slowing as quickly as it could and i just wanted to know what i need to do to fix this?
i dont know anything about brakes so any info would be appreciated.

is it like a grinding noise ?, if so get them replaced right away, cuz there are no more pads. and possibly you will need new rotors if you have been using it like that.

You have two choices here.

1) Go buy a shop manual and study the brakes section. Then decide if it's a job you can do yourself.

2) Bring your car to a mechanic to have the brakes fixed.

i hear ya, thats my same situation, but with my dad. I just looked at my brakes 2 minutes ago, they looked fine. I think brake pads are fairly cheap, check online.
we though maybe the groaning was my ABS kicking in?
