whats your limit as far as weight goes?
mine is half my trunk, high and wide and weighs like 100lbs. iirc its 3 foot X 1.5 X 1.5 feet.
id like to make somethjing lighter but what could it be made out of besides MDF? i know some of you guys have nice setups and i wonder how much they weigh, and if you would weigh your car down by 100 lbs in the trunk

 

id look into Baltic Birch plywood or check into birch plywood found easily at home depot or lowes. its significantly lighter, easier to work with, but it costs almost twice the price of mdf.

 

Definatly a lot lighter than 3/4" - 1" MDF. Isn't ur enclosure built out of Birch plywood? My enclosure is pretty heavy especially with the woofer n it.

i'm guessing my box + sub weighs a little over 100 pounds. my sub is 39 pounds, and the box was roughly 65ish pounds.

 

The shipping weight on my speaker box was 215lbs w/ the subs. It made my 1/4-mile time suffer by .4 seconds and definitely made the car slower. Being that I am more into sound the racing it was a sacrifice I was willing to make.

I'm definatly more n2 car audio than racing, so it doesn't matter how much my box weighs. I have my box, amp, and extra battery n the trunk...along with a 1/2" MDF false floor, and a **** load of Dynamat Xtreme. My rear has a noticable squat to it, but as long as my system is loud & clear it doesn't matter.

 

It is a ported speaker box, 3/4 MDF 16x36x20.. Plus since the MTX 9500 subs weight about 55lbs each it has internal MDF braces to hold the magnet of the sub in place..

 

internal bracing= teh pimpness.

I don't want to know what my box is going to weigh. We had to change the design because it required 6 cu.ft. So we had to change the subs from firing up to forward to make it work. I wonder if my truck will ever get done.

Baltic Birch is an option. Or more common "Ultralite" Similiar density to MDF, but about a 1/4 of the weight. Of course 4 X the price as well.

 

i read on CAF that the "ultralite" mdf is easily ordered from HD or Lowe's...any truth to this?

 

I used to get it from a local lumberyard. If HD or Lowes has it, even better/easier. Although a bit pricier. Ive used Ultralite on numerous occasions in show vehicles in my somewhat younger days and we an account with the lumberyard for fair pricing.

 

That's where a nice problem comes up. My original plan for my old D21 was to fully deck it out, and put subs in the bed.

But I actually haul stuff with my Frontier. So I need the bed space. Plus, I'm trying to make it so it's a 2 person only truck. I'm not doing to the people in the extended portion thing again.

I checked on my truck yesterday. They had the dash apart, and was rewiring my power wire. I can't remember if they said they were done with the remote start/alarm. Oh well, I'll go down sometime today and check up on it.

They did say they were going to start working on getting the box in. They were cutting the pieces while I was there. So I'll take my camera along and try to get some pics.

 

What's the weight distribution on our cars? I've always wondered and just been too lazy to look it up. Anyway, I'm assuming my 5th gen is very light in the back so any extra weight back there might actually benefit handling. I think my box & subs are probably 60-70 lbs and then I have an amp & EQ in the spare tire well which is another 10 lbs or so.
