This may be a dumb question but would switching out the stalk for a cat Y pipe make me not pass emissions becaouse the Y pipe doesnt have the Pre cats.

Changing the Y-pipe may make emissions harder. You have to have the car warmed up to pass. Now if you have a straight pipe/Test pipe ... there is no way in hell you will pass.

 

You just have to drive it around few blocks and than get on a high way or something, go 60mph for about 10 min and you'll be fine.

the pre-cats only help when your engine is cold and making the most smog, but after your car is warmed up, the main cat takes over.

 

Warm your car up. Get it up to operating temp then drive it hard. A few spirited runs should do. Find freeway onramps and see how fast you can (safely) get to 70mph...that sort of thing. Then, take the car to get tested but DO NOT turn the car off. Don't let it idle for very long either. Get it in as fast as possible. You should be fine then.

 

you know what, without the pre-cats on your ypipe, can it damage your cat?

 

No. You can damage your cat by running rich though.

what the hell? there is no way you can pass emissions with a test pipe, i call BS on that! interesting.

 

You can in IL. Cars newer than 95 only have to have the ECU checked for codes...no sniffer test.

 

wow! that is sooo freaking tite! Man, you guys should have the craziest cars there, take advantage of all the power you can have. Man here in Cali, it sucks,

I have it the easiest of us all. Because my house is in what's considered a "farm county," I don't have any emissions testing.

Sniffer test is when the emissions are tested for CO, NOx, etc. levels.

 

ahhh^^ that must be something like i got. they just put this thing on my hood close to the driver side window and thats it, no reving or nothing.

With most testing now if the car is OBD2 they just plug into the computer to make sure it has no codes, and check with a mirror to make sure you have a cat. All 4 gens are OBD2 so you should be ok. I passed with a turbo and a factory cat with no prob. In Cali. the Natzis run the DMV and I don't know their rules.
