bought 5 gen shift ****, will it fit?

So I got a killer deal on a 6spd shift **** from a '02-'03. Will this **** fit fine without having to cut any threads off the orginal shifter? I am pretty sure the thread size will be the same as well.

Sometimes it is a PITA to get the stock shift **** loose, but just turn it hard and it will "pop" then you can easily unscrew it. If it has been taken off before, it is a breeze to screw the new one on. I have a 5th gen AE shift ****, as do probably a dozen other guys on here.

I have both, don't ask, and the 02-03 version is smaller than the AE version. They both fit but the 02-03 looks weird on a 3rd gen.

I currently have my old one back on, I like the feel better the the 5th gens

i just got the shift **** in the mail last night and imeediately ran out to install it. Feels great and looks great, but there is a little more metal rod exposed since its a shorter shift ****. About an inch. So I want to cut down the shifter a little and tap new threads. Anyone have any experience in doing so?
