heh..as the title says...my mom's 2k SE auto is at 202K right now...anybody there yet?? just curious...so far, this thing has been BULLETPROOF! we just had the sparkplugs replaced since 100K and have had the coils and MAF replaced once....the auto tranny is still holding up quite well, but it does jerk pretty hard on the 1-2 shift when it's cold....I'd say that's pretty good for a 5 year old car with 200k on the clock, dont you?

Is your mom ever home, or does she just drive back and forth from East coast to West coast?

well she put 90K on it the first year we owned it, because we were doing a lot of driving to houston to pick up/drop off my cousin at college (~300 miles) and we took several trips to new orleans....also, during that year when we lived in the city, her work was 20 miles away, and my school was 50 miles away (the schools outside the city are much better...) so we did a LOT of driving there...and ever since, it's only been a few trips to florida, louisiana, houston, and a trip to california...we moved out closer to my school (5 miles away, actually) and now that i am driving, the only daily driving she does is 30 miles to and from work....

honda, nissan, and toyota are definitely the most reliable makes on the market today...my friends '91 accord 5-speed (the car i learned to drive standard on while beating it death ) has ~240K on it right now, and it shows no sign of quitting...my brother's old civic had ~120 when he totaled it, and that was an accomplishment for that thing, cuz it was ragged out really bad...he treated it like dirt... and now my mom's max crossed the 200K mark, and i'm really happy to see that...she's looking into getting a murano soon, but i think she wants to keep her max, cuz she loves that thing

My 87 Integra + my 92 Accord coupe combined for almost 500,000 miles....never once saw a service shop or dealer. Only thing I ever replaced on either was a muffler and a CV joint...

Dont get a Honda with ABS because they are notorius for failing. Thats one reason why I switched back to Nissan.

I never knew Honda has known problem with the ABS. I had a 99 Prelude and it had 30k on the clock before i traded her for the Max and never seen a problem.

About 8 years ago I was looking for a used, sporty 4 door car and I wanted to try out some Honda Accords. I was looking at some 91-93 models because the newer body style was over priced at the time. I went to several dealers and I noticed that several upper mileage (85K+) Accords had their ABS lights on. I remember this on three different cars. Knowing how expensive ABS is to repair I decided to chill out and look for another car. I ended up scoring a killer deal on a 92 Acura Vigor with 40K miles on it. At about the 80K mark the ABS light comes on. I tried to troubleshoot the problem but I knew there was no way I was going to replace the ABS motor ($$$). So I ended up cutting the wire to the light and kept driving.

There are probably a lot of Accord owners out there that have problems with the ABS and don't know it. I notice it when they first get into the car and start it up the ABS motor sometimes makes a farting type sound about a minute after start up. A good friend of mine (who I carpool with) who has owned a couple Accords have all had ABS problems. I believe he had an 88LXi, 94 and now has a 97. The 97 currently has its ABS light shining bright.

My 01 AE has 145k as of last week. I work as a sales rep and up till last year, I was traveling around 30/35k per year. Now I'm down to 25k.

Don't know about the rest of the Maxima road warriors, but my car has been trouble free except for three minor problems; the @#$%! O2 sensor (replaced twice), the alternator, and my son's ability to tag a mailbox or trash can with the right side mirror (I'm on my third mirror). In very simple terms, the boy isn't driving my car anymore but he is using other forms of transportation.

Has anyone had to replace their CV joints? I know the CV's on Hondas only make it to 100/125k.

I'm not saying those cars didn't have ABS issues however, depending on the system, the light turning on when the ignition is turned may be normal and the motor pumping up the pressure in the resevior is also normal (the farting noise you described). Also, the ABS light staying on doesn't necessarily imply an issue with the motor, it could be a bad wheel sensor, etc.

ABS modulators go bad on all Hondas, what usually happens is the seals inside the sustem go out, when the system does a self test on it- energizes the pump motor( farting noise). When there isin't enough fluid in the reservoir on the ABS modulator/pump it stops the test and sets off a ABS light. If the test passes and the light doesn't come on- then its good, but if the light comes on as soon as you start to drive- AFTER the self test, its a wheel speed sensor.

I have a 91 Legend with ABS, and lately its been giving my GF some ABS lights every once in a while. I think I just need to rebuild the system with new seals for 20 bux and I will be set to go. BTW I'm a Acura mechanic

I have only 113K miles on my 01 Maxima, but my VG30E powered 90 SE 5spd Maxie lasted me to 340K miles and I ragged on her everyday to redline. My 01 is what I call a gem of a motor, from the dealer lot when I bought it- bouncing off the rev limiter doing a burn out, never broken the motor in, no oil leaks, no oil burning, 30+MPG on the highway, and probably holds the record for the most WHP from a 3.0L NA Maxima

My 87 Max has 169K runs rock solid and everything works on it even the AC (r12 frigid) my 2K max still under construction has 57K, with a new MAF feels like a champ.

I never replaced the CV's on my third gen., but it got totalled at 100K. No major issues with it other than the factory pads wore out early. On my 4th gen, I changed one CV at 100K , then changed the other one at 120K. Keep in mind that the CV joint never made a noise, but the boot tore I just changed the whole thing out. I think just the boot was $30 and the whole axle was $60. I am pretty impressed with my 4th gen so far (135K). My 5th gen only has about 45K so far, but I drive a lot.

Maxima's are really sweet because they don't have timing belts (except early models)!!! Most people really don't appeciate how nice this is. Timing belt replacement starts at $150 and goes up from there, unless you do it yourself. This is every 60-80K miles.

Thanks Blackbird for the backup, I know you know your cars.

I hope this helps,
Gears

Well, my 03 Max has 12k on the odo now (after 2.5 years of ownership). My wife's 97 Max just past the 45k mark. I don't think either of our cars will get to 200k, no matter how hard we drive

do you live in a town where everything is within a mile? geez...the closest store to my house is ~15 miles (it's a pretty small shopping center too), and we're 25 miles from town...45K is INSANELY low for a '97!

My 2k max has just over 100k and haven't had any major problems. But I also get that jerking from 1st to 2nd gear, when the car is cold. My mechanic told me not to worry about it too much as long as it shifts smooth once warm.

yeah, even at 202K, my mom's tranny does that, and it shifts butter smooth after it's warm...it's been doing it ever since ~80K, but it's not that big of a hassle, so we have never really worried about it....i'm just amazed that the AT has lasted this long when others have had theirs replaced at less than 100K...that was ONE of the main reasons i was looking for a 6-speed. (plus theyre just fun )

thats pretty good man---any car will last if you take care of them--my friends have old cars with lots of miles on it---84 honda accord with over 500k on it--same motor and tranny---another has a 92 maxi with 425k on it--runs like brand new---they just keep their cars maintained. My 2000 max only has 49k on it--and only have done the coils and maf.

Just wondering if changing the brake fluid every year or two would help preserve those ABS units? (I do this anyway to prevent moisture absorbed by the fluid from rusting out the calipers, etc.)

thats good to hear that your mom has gotten 200k out of the 2000 maxima so far. my dad's 2000 SE has had a lot of engine trouble with pinging. wonder if your mom's has had that too? what type of fuel does she use? also, advise her not to get that Murano. the gas mileage sucks! esp for the amount of driving she does. just stick with a safe midsize car.

I'm up to 117k on my '03 (purchased January, 2003, not 2002.). So far I've had to replace the tranny, interior fan, interior heating and cooling control module, had the sunroof adjusted because it leaked, replaced the fogs WAY too many times, had the front bumper painted twice because Nissan can't seem to figure out how to make a paint that won't chip when someone looks at it funny, tires twice, brake pads about four times, and had the rotors turned. Now I'm leaking oil through the rings at WOT (a little puff of smoke when it shifts) to the point that I add a quart every 1,000 miles.

And despite all that, I still love the car!?!? Either I'm a real glutton for punishment, or there's something special about the Maxima.

whenever i'm in the car, i haven't heard any sign of pinging, or any abnormal noises for that matter, and my mom has never complained about any noises (although, she IS a woman, and oblivious to that kind of stuff) but now she's telling me that her dad (an ex-mechanic) said her motor mounts need replacing? i don't really know anything about it, since i havent been in her car since i got mine in september, and i'm all the way in Phoenix right now, so i'm not able to see what the problem is....sooo she's gonna take it in to our trusty mechanic and see what's wrong...i'l report back when i hear new info.....as for the gas mileage on the murano: supposedly those things get 24 on the highway (according to nissan) which is better than a lot of you maxima drivers get (i have no clue how though, cuz i always get 30) but she's not exactly a 'conservationist' so she's not too worried about the lower gas mileage...she just says she's ready for something bigger....

Well I'm at 85,000 on my 2002, purchased in late 2002 with 16,000 on the clock. ONly problems I've had are rotors a couple times and I just replaced an 02 sensor. I'm hoping this car will last to about 150-160K (that'll be about 2 or 3 more years, I'm in sales too so I usually do at least 2,000 miles a month.) Here's to hoping everyone breaks 100,000 with no problems.
