They really are in general cut from a certain cloth. Tonight I merged in front of some cheap looking 1990 Bronco or something, and all of a sudden all these lights turn on and a siren like an ambulance bleeps. Then the dude passes me and turns off the lights. It was a legitimate merge, why do that? I'm very glad that they make only 55,000 and have to risk their lives. They're lucky to even have a job with their mentality. Good thing for us their unions aren't powerful enough to get them more salary the way public school teachers do. 74,000 a year for 8 months work and they threaten to strike, and the school districts always cave in (they have "questionable" masters degrees, has anyone actually checked them?).

Where are you living that the police make $55k and Teachers (especially) make $74k??? Wow.
Now granted, I'm in neither profession, but last I looked around here, PG county,MD police start at $38k and Teachers around here are maybe in the $40's if they've been here a while. Howard county teachers make a bit more...but it's nowhere near the $70's.

a n b

a: this is off topic but i suppose i'm not a moderator so I should shut up

b: how many times do I have to say it: there are good cops and bad cops .. just like there are good lawyers and bad lawyers, good students and bad students, good bakers and bad bakers.

damn generalization might be the easy route, but it sure isn't the enlightened one

It may be in some jurisdictions...

but it does suck when ppl don't respect the organization style of the .org and keep things in the right forum... i mean I love Off-Topic just wish ppl knew how to use the forums properly

that's all

And for the record I think all degrees are questionable.

what do you mean all degrees are questionable, I can guarantee, that when I get may BS in physics and math it's not going to be questionable. I'm spending 2-3 all nighters a week studying and doing my hw and such, you better believe that when I get the hell out of here my degree is going to be legit

p.s. I have 2 math finals tomorrow, both of them are but rapings... school sucks

I think about 95% of academics teaches you very, very very little about the real world. That's my point.

I'd much rather hire someone with 4 years of experience doing X than 4 years of studying X in an academic setting.

I guess what I mean is, a degree doesn't tell me much. Some of the brightest people I've ever met have no degree, and some of the most senseless idiots I've ever met have 12 years of post-secondary education. The reverse is also true, but I'm just saying experience trumps education every time.

1.)Generalization ALWAYS causes problems.
2.)Anyone can buy strobes and a siren and put it in their vehicle. The guy was almost definitely NOT a police officer.
3.)PD AND EMS use the same sirens.
4.)Off-topic?

I would have to disagree. Yes, it's teaches very little about the real word, but it's not easy. To get a higer education degree takes time, discipline and money. If you can put up with all those bull****, you deserve to be rewarded.

It's true that the degree itself is pretty useless. Honestly, I could have learned more working in a plant for 4 years than I could have being in school for the last 4 years earning my Chemical Engineering degree. A lot of school is just BS and procedure. But I'll say this, someone who went through all that school is probably going to be more disciplined and hard working than someone who didn't. A lot of people don't ever even work in the field they majored in, but it's getting there that counts.

Rewarded how? With some entry-level job making $40k as a sycophant?

Look, I'm not knocking hard-earned degrees. I'm just saying 99% of academia teaches people very little about the real world. The people who impress me most are the people with true experience -- and this is why I think it's great that a lot of people are working while in school now, to strengthen their marketability.

Like I said, I'm not saying degrees are lame or anything like that -- they are definitely NOT. I was just trying to say broader is better.

Right -- BS and procedure. To me, learning to tolerate BS and procedure mostly makes people weaker, not stronger.

Hmm, now this topic can stay in the forum, just edit it and add "mechanics of heel toe shifting in a Maxima.." heheh

I agree about the degree thing, it may look good on paper and all but...
I was in the NYC public school system for all of my middle school/high school career and I have encountered some retarted teachers, and a lot of them.. When I found out about their education I was amazed at how a graduate from a good school or someone with a masters can be such a ****ty teacher.. The fact is, you may know how to do your job very well, but be a complete ******* about it and disregard it, knowing that you can get away with a lot of things.. You can also be smart and get away with a lot of things and still do your job

This applies to more then just cops, u can figure it out...
