Hey all, im looking for a replacement for a kicker KX650.4 the over heating is just enough to **** ya off lol, the name that song by bass line game sucks its rated at 70x4 RMS at 4 ohms...looking for something at or above that...was thinkin about going with the JL 300/4 and or 450/4 but was wondering some other brands..... i dont know much car audio products outside of the mass produced/mainstream ones(JL, kicker, rockford, kenwood ect) but amp must be good with heat... my JL 500, does just fine so id figure a 4 chan JL would be much of the same???

oh and just for yalls information so i can get better replys, the amp will be for a set of Orion P6.2 6.5 components(4 ohms 100/150 watts) and alpine Type R 6.5s(350 peak, 70 rms, 4 ohms).....as far as price, i know for this kind of power, the price will not be cheap cheap, but im considering the Jl 450 and thats a 450$ or more amp

Ohh that sucks man. I was scared that my Kicker IX406 was gonna over heat so I rigged up some cpu fans on it o help keep it cool...don't know how much that did but I didn't over heatthe amp! But back to your question...you should check out cardiscontstereos.com they have some audiobahn amps for pretty cheap and my experience \with audiobahn has always been good but that just my 2/100 of a dollar

 

In no way does Audiobahn measure up to any brands he currently has in his car.

Talk to Don if you dont want something mainstream, he will probably say get Arc. Id agree.

But why not figure out the problem with the Kicker amp?...Kicker makes good amps, it shouldnt be having that problem. Do you not have warranty from where you bought it?

sounds like inadequate cooling or someone is clipping hardcore...my kx150.2 barely breaks a sweat here in FL compared to my sub amp. i would not just throw away this amp...especially for a JL amp.

 

hummm... well i have the amp, its not going anywhere right away..... but this amp used to do this awhile ago, when i had it pushin solo baric and my orions.... but its not... what exactly is clipping? and how can tell if it is happening?.im very much a newb when it comes too this, i know common knowledge pretty damn well, but past that, i get a little bit lost, and quick to toss an amp. even one as expensive as this thing lol..... i checked the trouble shootin on the manual for what it does, Red light light on, 1 of 2 things, not enough volts and or amp is too hot. and i went with 2 hot, cause my JL is thumping away while its off, but the built in fan on the amp is like in over drive..... the gains on this amp i have down too like just over 1/4th no bass boast.... the amp is right infront of the subwoofer port, plus ith as its own fan.... perhaps this might have something to do with this, but earlier i was playin it, and like the tweeters up front, would just go out, not run, the mid/woofer was still running, but i lost the high pitch noise.id turn it down theyed come back..turn it back up, they would be back, but only for a little bit, then gone again.

 

move the amp and see how it does..just lay it somewhere in the trunk for a short time and see how it reacts.

 

what slick said, make sure it has sufficient air space around the amp for it to cool properly.

 

ill try it out, see what happins....but the more i thought about it, after what u guys said, im leaning towards this being some other kind of problem, cause the amp, this afternoon was only running for about 45 minutes..... about one an d ahalf hours total all day....but with like a 2 hour break.....but after that 45 mins the amp was on fire...but amp has ran before 45 mins in this set up, same location...soo ill check it out, see if that helps.

 

here is some pics of my amps lay out with and without the amp cover.....and the amp cover has no plexiglass on it...just an open hole.... how much more in the open can an amp get? but some visuals so yall might be able too help an idiot along some more.

Sounds to me like your amp is overheating due to it being pushed too hard- where/how are your gains set?

Is the false floor you have have plexi window? Could be that the heat being trapped in the tire well and between the floor is not allowing proper ventilation

The other amp suggestions you've made are equally or put out less power than your current kicker amp. If you have to crank your gains that high on your current amp to get the desired result, thinking of getting another amp rated for same power does you no good.

no plexi cover.and also my gains are set at about ah screw it, heres a picture lol amp 2 is the orions, amp 1 is the type Rs, also the frequencys are they set ok????

 

Weird they do not look to be out of the ordinary...When you speak of your amp overheating....do you mean that it cuts off the music and go into protect?

As fgar as the freq goes- looks like you have both Xover ~100hz...Have you tried setting them @ 80hz? so they play more midbass...

 

Yea the amp cuts off, light is still on... red lighto n the side next too the green light comes on, and the fan kicks into over drive......but no music, bass is going tho...... i got a feelin it my be related too my tweeters cuttin off problem... was talkin with slick he said that when clipping an or distorting(damnit i forgot what exactly he said) the tweeters just cut off, but mid bass's keep playin, which might be my case ..::shrugs:: im l lost

 

Check your speaker connections ...amp has speaker protection as well- its always a possibility as well as the xover from your comps having issues
There's no reason that amp should overheat playing 4ohm stereo w/ your settings....

 

all connections are good........what about in the cross over? parralel or Bi wire???..... and +3 0 -3 -6???

 

def check the way you had your sub hooked up, i had the same problem (with the amp) kept going into protect, turned out i had it hooked up to run at 1 Ohm and my crap amp couldn't handle 1 Ohm stable..changed it to run at 2, and it stopped overheating..
just a suggestion.

 

yeah what he said your speakers could be wired wrong they could be wired to low(ohms) for the amp to handle. also how are you powering your amp are they wired off of one cable from they battery or two?

 

a quick way to see if its the way your speakers are wired is to unhook all your speakers and just let the amp with no speakers on it. If ot overheats then it may be internal or your ground

 

also check voltage, at the amp when your wanging on it....it'll need proper voltage. My KX650.4 is under the seat of my Tahoe, and never shuts off.

i read that in the amp manual, so far she has been good, very tempramental i guess lol......but if the voltage dropped, wouldnt the sub amp go off 2? since they are coming from the same block?.......
