My speedomer needle is stuck on 70: what can I do?

My speedometer needle got stuck on 70 MPH. It won't free up until I hit a bump and fall below 70. It will no go beyond 70 MPH for it stops there and seems to get stuck and won't move until I hit a bump. I tried accelerating quickly past 70 to "force" the needle past that point but it stops there at 70.

I guess I'll take the instrument cluster out and work the needle by hand. Long time ago I install my gauge rings so I am familiar with how to get in there.

My question is has anybody experienced this and what needs to be done to fix it?

damn...just find a used odo on ebay and do the swap, dont take the car to a dealer or shop, or they will report the mileage discrep to carfax and your resale value will sink

have u put on any of those "euro" gauges. i had some on my previous car and it didn't stick down very well and my needles were catching. i had to glue them down to fix it.

do u have cluster rings? if u do then it must of moved.. just open your cluster and reposition it

or if u have aftermarket relays .. you might want to check those out.

if your cluster is stock.. then but another one..

As you said, you've opened up the cluster to install guage rings... Well, i can almost guarantee the rings are the problem. Mine did the same thing, got stuck at 80mph and 3k RPMs.

Just readjust them (the rings) and maybe use some epoxy to make sure they dont move again.

My speedometer seems to be working fine now by sweeping past 70 with no problem. I changed nothing.

Since it's not too huge a task, I would suggest to adjust your rings and secure them. It will probabaly just happen again if you dont.
