Am I running rich?

well i just filled up the tank and ran for a day or two of fairly conservative driving. Then I had a little run on the highway from a stoplight w/ a camaro (dont worry, no street racing - just to the speed limit) and i noticed that the gas gauge had dropped from the highest line to almost quarter tank. Now I know that these arent always the most accurate things in the world and I did sit above the top line for quite awhile, but would calling for such a rich A/F ratio during that acceleration cause that? I did just replace my knock sensor and tightened it fairly snug - is it possible that if it isnt torqued correctly that it could cause that when the engine is under extreme load like that or are these 2 unrelated? thanks guys.

Sticky float is a possibility, as well as vapor pressure that causes the float to stay higher than the actual gas level. Remember also, that the float has to travel downward a ways before the gas level reaches the bottom of the float and registers on your dial.

The fuel level guage float has nothing to do with the a/f ratio so the richness this is unrelated. But the ecu does go into a more rich program during wot.

Your float probably just got hung up. If you really want to know how much gas you used, just fill it up again and take note. And your float will NOT stay suspended from teh fuel "vapor". Despite what's posted above

Just so you know how bad the maxima floats are, I filled her up last week and the needle was above full. The car sat for 5 days with no driving. I get in the car yesterday and the needle is at the 3/4 mark. I turn on the car and within seconds it's above the full line again.

ok thanks guys.

yea, Jeff92se - i just thought that if for some reason i was running abnormally rich that since i called on the engine for such a rich mixture that if something wasnt working right it would use a lot of gas (rich mixture) and in turn cause such a drop. thanks for clearing things up.

Yeah, just can't trust the gas gauge very much.
