So, on the highway last night I ran into a older BMW 740iL. Huge car.

Anyway, I was behind him and he gunned it. I gave him a second to get a safe distance behind and then took off. From 50 - 110 nobody really gained at all. I let off at 110 because of traffic and the impending speed limiter.

I was surprised that it was so quick considering its size and weight.

You must remember that a V8 is a V8 and especially on the highway thats where you'll see those big cubes make power. just like a Porsche 996 TT would have trouble passing a Viper GTS on the highway.

I guess you *should* know that the car is fast. Thats what the "Ha" was for. You aren't allowed not to know stuff.

Yea...the hp and toqure is pretty high. Hp is like 280ish with torque above 300 I belive. Its hard to compete against big dipacement engines....let alone bmws. If you think that was fast....cuz you guys were even..try the 750. Thats a good old V12 with more hp and torque. Should walk away nicely from your already fast car.

Yep, the 750il runs 326 hp/361 ft lbs tq. Although they have speed limiters I think at 126 mph.

My mistake, I thought the 740 had a I6. Still, for a car that size, I didn't think it would pick up as well as it did.

Is the iL a special version of the 740, or are they all 740iL's?

Don't get me wrong, I like BMW's and its not like I expected to walk by him. But I figured I might gain a half a car from 50 - 100 and it didn't happen. I was impressed.

Yep. The "L" stands for "Long" as in a longer wheelbase/rear door. I'm pretty sure you can only get the 750 in the L trim. And it may be close to 4000 or whatever but with almost 80 more hp/80 ft-lbs of torque more it shoul be even.

Interesting. I've never seen a 750 in person. You don't see a whole lot of nice RWD cars in WNY.

My Dad used to drive a 98 740iL, the car didn't have much off the line bt it would wreck a lot of cars form 40 and up. My brother has a 2k 5spd and the 740iL would rape that car from a roll. To be honest with you I am surpirsed you stayed with him racing from a 50 mph roll. BriGuymax has pretty much the same mods as you do and i wouldn't have imagined it staying with a 740iL. But anyways nice race and you would smke that car from a stop. I am just waiting for him to get the 03 745iL 330hp up from 282 HEHEHE.

When I was back in Grade 5 I think, a rich family who car pool with us bought one. It fits 5 kids of 13years of age at the back seat very nicely!!! Oh, I think the kid's dad who owns the 740il threw up because he was seated very uncomfortably with 5 other kids at the back!!!

Hey, no matter how large a car is, only 3 passengers are allowed in the back seats, am I wrong? I see too many peepz with small cars cramming more than 3 persons in the back seat, as most sedans will either be 5 or 6(with front bench) passenger vehicles.

I ran against one with a Volvo V70 Turbo. The same story, he couldn't pull from me. It was a great run tho.

German cars arent geared for off the line acceleration. He would have started pulling on you pretty badly over 80mph. Thats where the sweet spot is for those cars. Once you get the 4200+ pounds in motion they really have some pull to them.
