P0455 Evap System Gross Leak (not a question thread)

This is a thank you thread and posting my solution!

I bought my car in January and a few weeks after I bought it the Check Engine Light came on. Between school and work I didn't have time to take it into the dealer to have it looked at, the light was on and off, sometimes it would stay off for weeks. When it started getting warmer the light became more frequent (I think it was the temp, or maybe just a coincidence). I know I am a horrible person for not taking care of it sooner, but believe me, I just didnt have the time or funds. I got lucky that it wasnt a much more serious problem.

About a month ago I hooked it up to my friend's computer when I was visiting him, he has an OBD II scanner and I got the P0455 code. About the same time I found this site and really started digging for answers. After finding that no one really had the same problem (at least I couldnt find it) I googled the code and found it it was due to a faulty gas cap or possibly a hole in a hose in the EVAP system somewhere. I didnt even know where to start looking for a hole in the evap system, nor did I really understand what it was. So I went the easier route. This webpage really helped me diagnose it.

I didnt want to take my car into the dealer, fearing it would cost alot, since I was past the warranty. I went on to courtesy nissan and ordered a new gas cap. I had suspected that the original owner had the gas cap replaced because it really didn't look right at all. I figured I might as well spend 16 bucks now, hoping I dont have to take it into a dealer. The differences in the caps (besides the new one locked with a key) was very noticeable. The new cap seemed much more reliable.

I filled up with gas, put on the new cap, cleared the code, and so far I have driven almost 1500 miles and it hasnt come back on (crosses fingers).

This is probably not a problem many people have, as in my case it was the previous owner using a cheap replacement part that caused the problem, but I figured maybe someone could use the info. It could also serve as a warning to make sure you get a good replacement part. I also wanted to say thank you to everyone because without all the knowledge of this site, I wouldnt have known how to reset the SES light. As I've said in some of my other replies, I'm inexperienced when it comes to the mechanical side of cars, but I'm learning a ton here. Thank you all.

yeah, i had the same code, and made a small write up on how i got rid of mine. could not figure it out how to link my post to the ses chart in the stickies so others could click on the error code and be taken to my post. i wonder if mods have to do this, or i am just handicapped.
