looks awesome man. Whered u get the dvd from ?

Anyways, i heard that if u hook up an external dvd player to it, then while watchiing a dvd (on the external player) and while navigating, than the navigation screen will show up instead of the dvd screen, to tell u to your route that u needto take.

I wonder if this is true, cuz thats a BIG +10 for the AVN.

not sure about the external player thing
i do know that with the avn, if you set a route on the navigation and follow the route then pop the dvd video in

and play dvd, the navigation voice will still guide you unless you miss the route then it will ask for the navi dvd back so it can reroute

the avn5495 can do dvd watching and navi guiding at the same time since the navi part is on the hardrive

i got the ATB dvd at Tower records

therein lies the problem my man. im crying over the cost of a new muffler, meanwhile i want to cop a $2000+ HU. life is hard sometimes.

I starting to think that getting an eclipse is not reasonable anytime soon, but the two things i DEFINATELY want, are navigation and an in dash monitor. no flip out (not that theres anything wrong with that) not my style, i want the flush mounted screen.
oh well, let me go windex my bose display

i hear you, i wanted an exhaust as well, but i figured i'd rather have the navi and the satelite radio, all in a package that looks factory. this took priority for me.

word. i definately feel you on that. im torn between nav/screen.....or rims/tires.....or intake/ypipe. My exhaust (all stock) just got loud as hell yesterday, so maybe the car decided for me.
Anyway, getting focused on the post, how does the eclipse HU sound? besides looking expensive and impressive, and having cool features...does it sound good? My bose is not loud at all, sub distortion, deck rattle, the whole thing.

yo instil, im stuck in the same exact position ur in. I am so damn confused on what to do. Either get this navigation, or rims/tires and lower it.

Im leaning towards the navigation because having a kick azz head unit is ESSENTIAL in every car. You should get the top of the line one when it comes to audio (atleast for me)

Rims/tires and dropping the car are just waaaaaaaaay too much money, exceeding the cost of the AVN.

But i think im leaning towards the AVN, over the D1, because i dont think u can bypass the D1.

Jeepik, its good to hear that you can still navigate while watching DVD. The AVN5495, with the harddrive is also a boat load of money.

i personally love the way the d1 looks
two problems
cant watch movies while the car is moving(which isnt a huge of a deal)
also you cant switch navigation destinations while the car is moving(which is rediculous)

thats why i went eclipse

yes, but lets say u get an external dvd player, could you bypass the D1 so that you could watch movies while ur driving?
I bet you can switch the nav destinations while the car is moving, if you bypass it.

my brief research of the unit came to a nil!!!

it apparenlty works on a gyrosopic type device and bypassing these options is next to impossible

Theres nothing to bypass, your on a completely different source, rendering Navi useless to eyes or ears. Just like on a home TV...If your watching something on Video1, then go to Video 2, can you still ear/see video 1 as well?

The D1 doesn't have an mpeg decoder on the dvd, so you can't watch movies.

Stock, it will not play an external source while driving.

Supposedly the D1 can be bypassed with a switch, but you have to cut the gps and vss lead while grounding the parking brake simultaneously. If I ever come up on some free time (ie. not buried by deadlines), I'm going to see if I can pull apart the firmware on the dvd to locate the lockouts. (gotta try to put that second degree in comp sci to some good use... eh?)

-Tom

P.S. I got the scosche kit off e-bay for like $6.

hrm....what could i expect to pay for the most basic eclipse monitor/hu all in one product?Especially since im not only your Maxima brethren, but also a fellow garden stater .
no flip out (im not even sure they make a flip out...regardless) and i gotta have navigation. Im looking at the eclipse units because buying a seperate monitor, then a nav HU was gonna be just as much money as buying it all in one.
secondly, i have a 2001. i can take out the bose and just swap in the eclipse unit right.....no custom work to make it fit flush?

what exactly are u trying to say/ask? eclipse units are hardly basic.

..and they make one 2 units that have navigation, one of which is not released yet (5495). that leaves one unit, which is a double din, not a flip out. it is however a flip DOWN, revealing 2 separate cd slots - 1 for cd/mp3 the other for dvd/navi.

it will fit flush, but you need a GXE dash kit to make it look nice. you will also need a PAC unit to use the bose system, IIRC.

i didnt want to say basic... but i meant if theres slightly varying models with extra features.... i dont need the 80gb harddrive, or mp3-playing capability.
im looking to buy an AVN then, i dont need that 5495.
As far as making it compatible with the remaining bose parts, if it is LOUDER than my lame HU is now, and bass sounds ok...ill keep the bose speakers/amp/sub.

the only eclipse model left thats all in one is the 5435. www.eclipse-web.com skip the intro, its featured at the bottom of the homepage. all specs can be found there.

also, regarding your bose, good luck. thats all i have to say.

For the AVN forget e-bay. If you are in NJ get in touch with DON, I just recently did some comparison shopping and he had a really good price INSTALLED. Furthermore, if you get an authorized eclipse dealer to install the unit you get 3 years of warranty (vs. 1 year when you self-install).

I ended up getting an AVIC D1 off e-bay and am going to attempt to install it myself (wish me luck). My final price out-of-pocket will most likely be under a grand (including harness, antenna adapter, trim kit etc.)

Moneywise, e-bay is almost always the cheapest place I find.

However, for the AVN's there is a much greater demand than supply on e-bay. Furthermore, the buy-it now prices were not competitive with quotes I got from local shops. Finally, the 1/3 warranty hit you take is insane. Much better to get an AVN from an installer.

The Pioneer, on the other hand, was WAY cheaper on e-bay than I could get locally, and may end up costing me up to $700 less than an AVN. I really liked the AVN, in fact, it
was almost perfect except for the really bland maps/interface.

However, $700 is a nice chunk of money to keep.

Haha... Smartest move I made was moving out of NJ. I pay about $1,180/yr now for really good (almost maximum) coverage in NY (no at-fault accidents/tickets). Pretty decent considering i'm 23. NJ was almost triple that!

overall it fits and looks better then the gxe kit

I don't... i got the avic D1 which doesn't play dvd's... if you ask me, it's a worthless feature that i would never use. I don't foresee ever wanting to watch dvd's in the car. The only reason I would get a DVD and attempt to unlock it to play while in motion would be to entertain the other people in the car, and frankly, I don't care that much.

On the other hand, I am interested in being able (or have my passenger be able to) modify the nav settings while en route.
