What key is used to open the backseats to trunk?

Hey guys, I'm having a bit of a trouble. You all know how you can fold down the back seats so that you can get to the trunk, the thing is, one portion of the seat that splits down is locked. I bought the car used, and I only have one key and the remote fob, the other part of the seat that folds down was unlocked when I got the car, but the smaller portion is locked and my key doesnt seem to want to unlock. Any way to open this up?

Is this for the 98 Max or the 2K Max?

OK, I just checked on my 2K3 and the regular key will open those locks. It just goes in half-way and unlocks. If we are talking about the same set-up on the 2K Max, the reason I think yours' does not work is that one key you got is the valet key. I believe it's missing that one tooth at the end that unlocks the glovebox, trunk and seatbacks. Anyone please confirm or disprove.

Than you must have a regular key. Just insert the key into the lock, it will go in only half way, and then turn. It should open it. If not, I don't know what the problem is than since the set up might be different on the 5th gen vs. 5.5th gen.

It's wierd because I can't unlock the locked seat, and I can't lock the unlocked seat. Could my key be messed up, like the tooth that's necessary to opent he seats? Or am I completely wrong and I require another key, which seems illogical.

There is no key to unlock your seats. All you have to do is move the levers on the backside of the backseats (the trunk end) to the unlock position.

Goto hell loser, you have way too much time to come in twice on my post to do nothing but annoy me and not help at all.

If you want to delete the thread then do it, it's a legitimate question, and I'm on my wits end, on the virge of just going ahead and ripping apart the locking mechanism.

where in the hell are you sticking this key? i have a 2k max, and the backseats do not lock or unlock with a key. what are you doing, sticking the key in the seatbelt slot or something? the backseats lock and unlock in the trunk. there's a freakin' lever that slides up and down. the lever is located on the BACK of the seats, visible through the trunk.

i'm really curious where you are sticking this key. either you:

a: have a replacement rear bench
b: have a "keyhole seat lock" option that i don't
c: this is going to be REALLY funny.

Yeah there is no key; only two levers on the back of the seat and two pullers on each side on the top of each seat, to fold down the seats

That's what I got...just pull up on the levers and if it doesn't go down with that then get in the trunk and look for the locks on the back of the seat. There shouldn't be a place anywhere to put a key in.

Must be different on the 5th Gen, because I have locks on both the right side and left side of my seatbacks.

yep..i'm pretty sure it is. the 5th gens lock is on the back of the seats, in the trunk. i'm pretty sure our friend is sticking the key somewhere it doesn't go.

No locks only levers. No reason for Nissan to put locks over there. You'll close the trunk anyway right?

Yup, on my 2K I only have the two pull-buttons... Your lock mechanism could be just jammed... See if you can to it from the inside the trunk...

Would be obvious BUT....
Is the seatbelt stuck over the seat so it catches it?

dude, he's trying to stick a key somewhere where there isn't a keyhole. do you really think it's too far fetched to think the seatbelt is draped over it?

hell, i would'nt be surprised if he's sitting in it when he's trying to open it.

I'll get you the damn pic.

But right in front of the levers, there are little slots that take a key in, and as TXT-1 said before, the key goes in half way, but doesn't turn. Now it could be a replacement bench or not, what ever the case is, I don't have a manual for the car, and if you see a lever and a slot for the key, and the lever will not lift... hmm, would you think the lever was locked? Oh no, you wouldn't because you're a bleeding genious! Well guess what, some things don't come so naturally to me, and I'm not a moron to be sticking in the key into something that doesn't look like it'd accept it.

Also if TXT was helping me thus far, wouldn't I have already stated that there wasn't a place to stick a key into, but there is, so I didn't say anything. Let me go get some batteries, and take some quick photos. People...

ok..in front of what? how can it be in front of something that is on the back of the seat? do you mean above, or below? do your levers move?

I think you guys are missing the obvious. If the 2k's didn't have a lock, then his car has had an interior swap from a 2k2/2k3 because those have locks. The reason the key doesn't work is because it's not the right key. Is the interior leather? Maybe the car didn't come with leather and it was swapped in. Was the car a theft recovery? Then the interior came from a different car/cars.

What replacement bench has locks in them?? I have a 2k there is no locks in the seat. People who have 5gen and 5.5gen maximas have chimed in here. There's no key for the seats. All you do is pull up on the **** from the cabin or pull the handle from inside of the trunk.

I seriously doubt that there is a lock anywhere in the back seats requiring a key. WHY?? Convienience and safety. What if someone, like a kid, gets trapped in a trunk?? That's why those levers are there on the trunk side of the back seats.

In fact, I think there might be a new fed. reg. that says that there must be a way to open the trunk or seats from the inside.

PICS PLEASE!!!

If the rear seat was replaced with a 2002-03 rear bench, it would have a key to lock/unlock. It is possible that the bench was replaced and the key was "lost". This happened to me in another car and I found the key when I got a flat-the key was under the spare tire, which was ironic considering that the only way to unlock the seat was from the back seat (inside the car).

The federal regulation requires that a handle to pop the trunk be installed and visible. The handle usually pops the trunk lid, not the seat.

More than likely what has happened is either the seat was replaced, or my bet, the car was rekeyed and the locksmith or dealer forgot the seat locks.

And yes, my '02 Does have locks in the seat backs and being a locksmith, I have seen many cars that do. Not trying to be a PITA, just giving my 2 cents.
