Have a 5th gen ECU in my 4th gen and...
So I thought I'd ask your side of the .Org for some input...
Anyone have any ideas why the SLIP, TCS OFF, and the Service Engine Soon lights would suddenly come on after normal start-up?
This is what happened...
Ran the car this morning, fine. Started up later - - and was greeted with the 3 lights.
Turned off car for a few mins, SLIP and TCS OFF are now gone, but SES light remains on solid. Re-started car late, same lone SES light but now it runs like crap.
Also, my 99 SE-L has 50,500 miles on it, no apparent problems leading up to this.
Again, mine is a late 99 Cali-spec SE-L - and has the 5th gen ECU with NO VISIBLE screw inside ECU box so as to check for the MIL code on my own.
At the mercy of the dealer! No AutoZones where I live.
Any ideas as to what may have caused the sudden appearance of the SLIP, TCS OFF, Service Engine Light when nothing else has apparently gone wrong?
Any input besides "turn the screw in the ECU and read the code" would be greatly appreciated!

When all those lights come on at the same time, 99% of the time it's the coils. After a few a few drive cycles and startups, only the SES will remain lit, but the car will drive like crap. It's best to get the code pulled ASAP, and repair/replace the required sensor(s). And, no, on the 5th gener's, there's no adjustment screw to reset or extract the codes...you must need a code reader.
Thanks for the replies !!

I take it that we CAN re-set the 5th gen ECU with a scanner tool to clear a code and turn off an SES light?
I've read that disconnecting the battery to clear the ECU is not the best way.
Maybe I should look at getting an OBD2 Nissan code scanner, because as it is, I can't do any maint that involves the SES light unless I pay a dealer to reset the ECU and turn off the light. Yoy.
AutoZone sells ODB2 scanners for $100. You can probably find one on eBay for less than that. I think if you go to Wall Mart, that has an auto bay, they will scan it for you for free. Or you could always buy one there, use it, and then do a return.
