First time at the track tonight... and it sucked

So I decided to track my car for the first time tonight, just to see what would happen, knowing that dragging would be less exciting than autocross (despite the crappy tires I've been running). So I arrived at the track with my friend, having been delayed about 30-45 min by a huge argument I had with the g/f (fun fun) and I'm told that the gates are closing at 8:30 tonight. I saw that my clock had just turned to 8:30, and knowing that it ran fast, I asked if I could be let in. The guy at the gate was screaming at me for some reason, telling me that tech was closed, but the lady that was there with him said I could check to see if tech was open. Sure enough, it was, so I went back, paid my entry fee and got tech'd. Went to change my tire pressures quickly after that (27 front 40 rear hot) and went to rent my helmet. The ladies that were renting helmets told me I couldn't rent a helmet, and told me tech was closed. I told them I had just gone through tech, and they told me that I could rent a helmet in that case. One of them told me I had to hurry, because it was costing them a lot of money to keep the track lit at night. Anyway, I ran to my car, looking like a dumbass limping cuz I hurt my leg the other day, and pulled into the pit. The guy who took my tech card told me I only had one run, and asked me what I had been doing all night. I didn't feel like saying much, being as I wasn't in a good mood by then, so I just said "At work". He told me to come earlier next time, and added some smart a$$ comment after that. Anyway, I pull up to stage next to an R32. I'm not sure if it was modified or not, as I didn't get a chance to check. I go around the burnout box, pull up to the pre-stage beam, and wait for the R32 to do the same. He does, and then I pull up to stage, but go just a bit too far, and the stage lights go out. I start backing up a bit, and just after I start moving backwards, the amber lights begin flashing. I'm stunned for a second (literally) and I forget to hit the brakes. Anyway, the light turns green, and I shift to first and bog it. The R32 kills me off the line, and has 1+ car lengths on me. Anyway, times tell the rest of the story.

(sorry, scanner is broken, so I have to type this out)
My Car (with mods in sig) R32
R/T ... .456 .509
60' ... 2.546 (horrible!!!!!!!) 2.142 (I was expecting him to do better)
330 ... 6.651 6.401
1/8 ... 9.999 9.844
MPH ... 72.51 73.75
1000... 12.869 12.840
1/4 ... 15.324 ( ) 15.330
MPH ... 90.10 90.28

I actually shifted to 4th by accident at the end of the run, and I hit the brakes early cuz I was being an idiot. Anyway, I was really upset at the run, and I knew I could've broken into the 14's if I wasn't going in reverse when the light turned green, if I didn't bog it off the line, if I had the correct shift point for 2-3, if I held 3rd, and if I didn't hit the brakes early. To make the run better, I wasn't sure where the exit was, and apparently the R32 did, as he cut in front of me to take the first exit (exit was on the left) forcing me to hit the brakes hard. Anyway, I was unsatisfied to say the least, and I'm hoping that I'll do better next time, if I can get myself to go again. BTW, I weighed my car after the run (with 1/2 tank of gas, unfortunately) and saw that it weighed 2974 without me in it, which isn't bad, considering the amount of fuel that was in it. Anyway, I guess the time wasn't horrible, but there were so many things that didn't go as expected, partially because I was hurried and worried. Hopefully next time things will go better
P.S. Sorry for the rant, hope no one gets upset with me after reading this stupid post, I had a horrible day and felt the urge to rant about it. Heh. Anyway, I'll hope for the best next time.

Yeah, I was really confident that I would run at least high 14's, with I/Y/E, short shifter, and by stripping some stuff out. Haha, yeah I did go to Englishtown, and they weren't very empathetic, so I'll just have to get out there earlier and make sure everything goes smoothly next time. BTW, is there an upcoming Nissan day @E-Town? I saw on their website that there was, but haven't seen anyone talking about it.

Most tracks don't require one unless you run in the 13's, and you're far off from that.

NHRA requires a helmet for 13.99 or faster, and all the tracks I have been to request it. Last weekend I had to dial-in 14.00 because I forgot my helmet. I hate slowing the car down that much but I had no choice...

That R32 must suck at driving. To get5 a 2.14 60' should yeild much better than a 15.33, I'm at 4000' elevation, the R32 I raced against had a similar launch and hit s 15.1 I believe.

With how bad you said everything was I'm surprised you ran a 15.32, I'm also surprised you paid anything to race once. I know you probably had no choice but I would have just waited until the next time. If you're arguing with your girl just leave, she'll be there when you get back. Nah I'm just kidding.

Common R32 60's are typically less than 2.0 or right around 2.0 ... Even stock

AWD > FWD for launching.

2.14 for an AWD sucks *****. I can do that with my FWD on street tires. They should be capable to consistant sub 2.0's. I know someone with a Talon running 13.80's at 96-97 mph, and his best 60 foot is 1.82.

at e town you have to wear a helmet at all times no matter what times you run. and they could be a little impatient sometime especially with newbies. i remember my first time out it was hot and i unbuckled my strap and when i got to the line they made me go to the back of the line for havent it undone. i think if he did 15.1 nervous he could of run a 14.8 after two more runs.

Haha, I can only hope so. Yeah, I thought the R32 ran a pretty bad time, i thought they were supposed to run mid to low 14's stock? I was surprised when I started pulling on him... it wasn't like he missed a shift, I just started pulling up on him at a constant rate. And I'm not sure if this guy was stock... but for his sake, I'm hoping he was... lol. And yeah, E-Town does require helmets, I'm not sure why. Anyway, I'm planning on going to the track this Friday when I get back from Cali, I'll strip the car down some more, and post timeslips when I get back.

Yeah, the AWD TT Golf is what I meant. Not a Skyline, haha. Damn, if an R32 Skyline ran that slow of a time, I would shoot myself, lol.

Being that it was raining last night, I decided not to go to the track, and got my Illuminas/Eibach's installed. Now if only that darn strut bar and my Kosei's/F1's would show up... Anyway, looking to track @ E-town next Friday (12th). Is anyone else planning on going?

sorry for the delay..no...I have yet to take it to a 1/4 mile track. but generally they run low 14s...one freak show ran a 13.2 or maybe 13.3 with reflash cai, and i think exhaust. But, like i said he is a freak. most people with reflash, cai, exhaust range from 13.5-14.5...

My first time to track

I went to the track tonight and ran 17's all night. I have a 2000 maxima se Auto, K & N filter and a Magna flow Muffler. I was pretty pissed. What have others with 2000 se auto run at the track? Does my car have a problem?

Check for codes. You're supposed to be in the 15's.

No point in speculating. I would check for codes first. Then go from there.

There is a local guy with an AE (2001) automatic. He has an intake, y-pipe and I think cat-back exhaust and he runs about 15.9 to 16 flat. He is also a pretty good driver (took 2nd in an import bracket event).

Unless you have a lot of mods, your times are a bit slow, but I don't think you're too far off for an AT. It's always a good idea to check for problems, though.

I took my car the first time last weekend, my first time was just aweful... dropped the clutch far to high and just hopped away from the line. The next 3 times i got better progressively. My last run I ended up with a 15.6 at 90mph. I am thinking a little more practice will help improve my times especially my 2.5 60's. I am not far off tho factoring in my elevation right?

Don't let yourself get beat up over this man. It took me my FULL first season to get things "down pat". And I was an A/T then hehehehe. Just keep trying as I can guarantee you, each time you go it gets better. There is a lot to think about your first season including learning how to get over the adrenaline and becoming consistent. I totally hosed my season up this year because I not only threw a 5spd into the mix but put N2O on top of that. Try being a first place racer most of the time and then suddenly be shoved to "noob" mode all over again. Between learning how to launch a 5spd and controlling traction under the spray...I'm a freakin track virgin all over again. Gonna change it up one more time even and swap a VQ35 in here so I'll be new ALL OVER AGAIN. ROFL. It's all about fun man just remember that. If you are out there to be serious...well..frankly..your in the wrong car

It takes once to get addicted. It takes a zillion times to learn how to whip that addiction into your favor.

Best of luck to you. I'm sure we all look forward to seeing your times and skills improve.

what i do is i hold the brake and rev to about 2,000rpm right before it starts creeping, then release the brake and go. now the trick is if you have the jump right at go you stand a better chance than if you leave the line second.

Sorry I haven't responded in a while... I had a chance to go back to E-town a few weekends ago, and ran again. I beat my friend's WRX w/AP and a few other mods, as well as an SRT-4, but lost to a civic HB w/engine swap. The civic was pretty quick, IIRC he ran a 14 flat. However, what was strange was that my best was a 15.1! In my first post, I said that I definitely thought I could run sub 15. And since I didn't, I'm left wondering what could be wrong with my driving. People actually did complement me on my runs, and in the vids, I could tell my shifting was quick, but I still ran slow (IMHO)!
Anyway, my 60's could definitely be faster... they were all in the 2.3 range. It seems that I'm having trouble launching, though, and I can't tell if it's because I suck at driving, or because of my tires. I ran 26 psi in the front, 40 in the rear with these suckers:

If I launch over 1500 rpms, they just spin. I don't think I'm letting the clutch out too fast, or giving it too much power. But then again, you never know.

I'm going to the track again once I get my new rims/tires, but I don't know when that'll be. Anyway, what do you think I should blame my times on: my tires or myself?

EDIT: The tires were worn down to this point on a closed course (autocrossing) and still have enough tread left (well, not on the shoulders) to be considered legal. So don't immediately go and flame me for driving with unsafe tires.

I ran, 30psi, 27psi, 25psi for the front and got the same results. When I switched to different tires that is when I got the different results.

I don't brake torque anymore. After 1k rpm my car starts to move. I just hold my left foot on the brake and my right on the gas. When the last yellow hits I release the brake and slowly accelarate out of the hole. Accelarating faster out of the hole only broke my tires loose. After the first couple feet I hit wot and spray and it goes quick from there.

Are those tires incredibly old or just worn out? They look dry rotted and such.

Actually, they only have ~10k miles on them, the shoulders wore down quickly from daily driving, and the inside treads were ripped apart during an autocross at Giants' Stadium. From what I heard on TireRack, these P06's wear down quite quickly, even without pushing them too hard.

Also, I don't normally blame anything on tires because in general I believe almost any tire can produce 60' times and it's the driver's fault if they aren't, I don't get the feeling from those tires that they are going to offer much in the way of grip.
