Stock muffler -vs- nonstock

My muffler is rusted and has a hole in it,no suprise there as my whole exhaust is completely rusted. Should i get a nissan muffler or just go to a muffler shop and have them use whatever kind they use. I know the price difference will be large, but should i pay the extra money for the oem part?

Someone on here will be selling their OEM catback I'm sure. Check the 5th gen classifieds.

OEM is over 400.00 so I would say buy a Flowmaster 50 in SS for 90.00.

besides the noise though, a muffler is a muffler for the most part correct? i want it to be reasonably quiet, but you know im not paying $400 for a muffler. If theres no other reasons besides the noise factor, I'll check out what the muffler place uses...thats why i ask if theres a difference tho

It's not ONLY noise. The OEM muffler flows reasonably well. You don't want to get it replaced with something more restrictive. Even a "straight-through" style "coffee can" muffler can be restrictive if its internal diameter is too small or if it has a louvered core instead of a perforated core.

I have borla pro xs, and it sounds nice. Not loud, has nice low growl and non-restrictive. It only costed me $100 including installation at local muffler shop.

The Flowmaster 50 is a 3 chambered muffler. The chambers help cancel out resonation from the exhaust. A straight through muffler usually is packed with a sound absorbing material that can degrade over time causing the muffler to get loud. These mufflers are usually loud and often drone on the highway or cruising at 2k RPM's. Your OEM muffler is stainless and if you go to a muffler shop it is a great bet you'll end up with a aluminized steel muffler that can rust out in a year or so if moisture gets trapped inside.

That depends on where you live. Here in Georgia, we don't really know what automobile rust is. Every time I hear about all the damage that road sand and salt causes on an Org member's vehicle, I am just thankful that I live here.

i know that you can find an aftermarket exhaust that is better flow than oem, of course they are usually louder, but they dont have to be, just buy a decent brand like magnaflow....

Is this shameless self promotion of your for-sale magnaflow??

I want a semi quiet exhaust so I'll be looking around for a cheaper alternative to the oem muffler (i've seen it priced new from $289-$375), and will be looking for a good balance between least expensive and quiet sound. I dont need it to be as silent as my original muffler, but i dont want to be like the local honda with the wack body kit and 'hot' new exhaust that i hear coming 9 blocks away.
Also, in the next month-month and a half, im getting a y pipe. I figure that will add some extra loudness, will it make things signifigantly louder, or just add a little rumble?

not a plug, but i was just saying a brand. greddy is another brand. Catman is one i have heard on a 5th gen and it sounded nice, not too loud. a y-pipe will usually open flow and maybe make it a bit louder, but not much atleast for a 3rd gen.

also i saw a 5th gen muffler for sale for 50 in the classifieds.

just kidding about your sale....thanks for that input though.
What are you gonna replace yours with (or already did) when you sell your magnaflow? put the stock one back on?

i put a 5th gen muffler on. my vg is no racecar....i just didnt realize i would attract every ricer from a saturn to a civic to a pontiac 5000 wanting to race me...i dont race the VG so i took it off even though i loved the sound at WOT and the growl it made....

Lovely,thats what i needed to hear.thank you

TripleG, thats what im saying. For one, im not buying a loud exhaust like im trying to seem like my max is souped up wit every bolt on and upgrade when its not. Secondly,my personal preference is quieter=better. Nothing wrong with somebody who wants to add a little rumble to what they have, but i just want my car quick, and quiet.

ehh....i could bet that we get a lot less rain here and the roads here are have never seen salt. but..from parking previous cars outside everyday always resulted in rust for me.

Mine is rusted from front to rear and i only, but it is a 2001 so i guess that is expected.

We have lots of road salt, and tons of bad roads (potholes, dips) from the temperature fluctuation... but you have mudslides and earthquakes out in CA. Your car could be possibly covered by,or swalled up by earth. Theyd have already stolen your headlights tho by now in NJ

this is such a misconception. mudslides only happen in VERY select areas and the earthquakes are soo overrated. hasn't been a single one to disrupt society's way of life for over ten years. dirty south sucks, you guys have hurricanes. midwest has tornados all the time. if you ask me, socal = the win
