clearing an intermitent check engine light

my check engine liht was on in my 98, checked the code, 0304, which is the knock sensor, i reset it jut in case it was a one time thing and the light came back on. problem is that it flashes eratically depending on engine speed. is that normal? under heavy accel( not all the way) it stays off until 30-40, and it stays off when coasting until i stop. what i also found strange is that any time i key over the car now( not start it) it goes into diag mode and displays the code again. is that normal? i turned the screw back counterclockwise. i also cheked the resistance at both pins leading to the knock sensor and they are both out of limit, so i assume the knock sensor is no good. i'll change it and try again, but my biggest concern is that the check engine light is eratic like that.

ps has anyone replaced the knock w/o removing the intake. it looks possible. but my hands are big, lol.

Holy moly 1736 posts - where have you been?

1. the CEL will not light for just the knock sensor - you have at least one or more codes stored
2. the flashing CEL while driving indicates misfires... check the codes again or have autozone pull them for free and look up all the codes that are found.
3. the KS can be replaced without pulling the intake manifold off - look in the stickies for the howtos.

Perhaps since he is 3rd gen the KS will trigger the CEL?

His post is about his 1998 Maxima - which would be a 4th Gen.

it was on solid before. then i checked and got 0505(no malfunctions). it went away for 2-3 minutes and came back on. checked again and got that. then it was intermitent afterwards. at least i know why it's intermitent.
