SOMETHING BAD HAPPENED! tranny? clutch? help!
SOMETHING BAD HAPPENED! tranny? clutch? help!
was on freeway tonight headed back to SF, went to downshift and couldnt get it out of 5th... coasted off the road and shut off the car. Started it back up, could shift through all gears just fine. Drove around for a minute in first and shifted to second. it was a little hard to shift into second and made a little winding noise. then i couldnt get it into third or out of second. Stop again. Decided to try to make it home so i jumped back on the freeway, it was hella hard to shift through the gears (almost didnt happen), but i made it to 4th and got home.
WHen i got home i took a closer listen and if i put the car in gear it makes a moderately loud winding noise. No grinding noises. Plenty of clutch pressure. and i can get it into any gear with a little effort, but every gear makes the same winding sound.
Any ideas? is it my tranny? i have 143k miles. changed the tranny oil to redline MT-90 about 20k ago. no leaks. everything else is perfect. ANy help appreciated ASAP.
Thanks
Devin

Ya if you have Exedy this could be your problem for the whining. My friend's 5spd (which I bought) did this when he had the Exedy clutch, he had to return to a stock transmission.
your synchros might be out. and it cant be your clutch because you really only need that for first. once you use the clutch to get moving you really dont need it anymore, its bad for the trans, but can be done. i would say synchros. mine are starting to go on mine, and my friends allready went out in second. if the griding is once your in gear then it might not be the synchros, but if you try and get in a gate when its not rev matched (i.e. not double clutched) then it is def. the synchros. it makes a little wirhing sound for a while after your in and out of gear because they are still spinning. the shifting problem could also be bad transfluid. motorvate describessomething along the lines of this. i would say get that changed first, less money then a clutch, its $124 dollars at nissan, and if they fuq it up you can have them redo it again. also, if your in a situation that you think you cant shift, its best to keep moving, because if it is your clutch your screwed and cant put it first. also, you dont ever need to use the clutch to take out of gear. just give it a little gas, then right when you let off, the gears float and have no stress on them and you can take it right out.
I have a stock clutch... Replaced at 60k miles by the dealership.
Clutch fluid is at proper level. Slave cyll was just replaced a couple month ago, and clutch pressure feels normal.
So if synchros suddenly went out, does this mean i need a new tranny or can synchros be replaced?
I might also mention that right before this happened, as i was pulling out of fifth, my foot slipped off the clutch a tad and i had to press it again to get it out of fifth... but during the first press i made, i was pulling a little hard on fifth as my foot slipped and the slutch wasnt in far enuf... is it possible i may have damaged something there???
My mechanic thinks it's the clutch bearing since it drives fine. I had a suspician my clutch has been going out due to some slipping. Is clutch a definate posibility or does this sound more like tranny?
Thanks,
Devin

well the only GOOD thing about this is you need to drop the tranny either way - if it's the clutch bearing (assuming you mean the throw-out bearing) then it can be chanced in 15 minutes once the tranny is dropped - the syncro's can be changed but i think its expensive. This does sound more like tranny issues than clutch issues. Does it slip at all when you launch or? describe the slipping a little bit more...
