Broken lug nut key

I have a HUGE problem. I had a flat tire and noticed I had 3 nails in it. So I aired up the tire and drove to a tire shop. I have 18 inch rims on a 1990 maxima and the holes for the nuts are very small so I have lug nuts where the key fits inside the lug nut. I told them not to use an air gun on them because the label says not to. When they tried to loosen the nut, the key twisted and broke off w a piece of it inside the nut. They said that whoever put them on before had over-tightened them. He said that the only way he wld be able to get it off would be to heavily damage the rim. Is there any way to get them all off w/out damaging the rim?

Call the distributor of the lug nuts and get another key sent. Depending on the lugnuts there should be a serial number or some sort of identification on the key. I had the same dilema.

Either way you will need another key to get off the other wheels. It was just the method that was used to remove the lugs. It may have been crossthreaded on there or just overtightened. But the key was probably weekend by the airgun and broke off if you get a new key you should be able to get it off no prob with a breaker bar. Goodluck hope you get everything worked out.

what you can do is get a thin walled 16point socket that is SLIGHTY smaller than the size of your lugnut. this is assuming it will fit in the hole of the rim... attach an extenstion to it, and hammer it on the lugnut.. the metal in the soket, is stronger then the metal of the lug so the 16 points of the socket will dig into the metal of the lug. hammer it on as much as you can, then get a breaker bar and twist.

I tried the same thing among other methods and it didnt work you are more likely to damage the wheel with methods like that. Best bet is new key but order (2) this time.
