no, EGR function is handled by altering the camshaft overlap to keep partial amounts of exhaust gas in teh combustion chamber during cruise...

Correct! The VQ35 and QR25 both do this.

and so do many fords, as well as all late model water cooled Porsches and just about every engine with variable valve timing...

Many new engines with variable valve timing do away with traditional EGR systems, but you can't really say "just about every engine with variable valve timing..."

All of Toyota's VVTi cars (as far as I know) use valve overlap instead of conventional EGR systems, but some Nissan engines with CVTC (like the QG series) had traditional EGR systems until very recently (half way through 2003). Some of Mitsubishi's MIVEC-equipped cars (like the Galant) had conventional EGR systems until just recently too (I don't know if they still do or not). I'm sure there are other cars with variable valve timing and conventional EGR systems, but I'm too lazy to go Googling the issue.

I will admit that conventional EGR systems on cars with variable valve timing is becoming less and less common. In a few years, your statement will be very true.

its true now, as well can tell from the above quote.

for every one engine that has control of the phasing of the exhaust cam, and STILL uses an EGR valve you can come up with, i can point out TWO that dont...

I have no idea why I lumped it in with the Mitsus. I'm kicking myself now.
