cf trunk and stock trunk weight savings

Well since my 96 is going to be my drag car i decided i would take alot more weight out. I took the trunk off and gutted it. The trunk with no spoiler weighed in at 29 pounds. The spoiler weighs 5 pounds. With all the metal i took out of the trunk with no spoiler is now 22 pounds. You cant tell i gutted it since i put the carpet back on.
From this post here
http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....r+trunk+weight

It says the stock trunk weighs 45 pounds which is false. Has anybody actually weighed there cf trunk? What was the weight? According to that post it's shy of 20 pounds which isn't much of a diffrence from my trunk now.
I know people get the cf trunk for looks but what about you people that are buying it for weight reduction? It's probably only at most 5 pounds less than my trunk for $600.

I wondered this same thing about the hood, seeing as how a oem hood is really not all that heavy (finally having had the oppurtunity to hold one in my hands recently)
In discussing this same exact topic with my friend we came upon two decisions. (we were discussing this about the hood, as I have seen CF hoods for 600)

* per dollar advantages are low, and mostly cosmetic.

* that money is better spent on engine mods.

If your going to drag with this car then eventually you would want to start converting parts over to CF, but I would make that the last seeing as how you could get much more power with your money if you do your engine/tranny/suspension first. Worry about those things, then worry about CF.

If you want to lose weight, gut the rest of the car since you will be dragging it. Also, and I mean this in all seriousness, cheapest weight reduction on earth is to reduce weight of driver. This comes from motorcycle riding wisdom

man that is a shocking report, i had no idea how much the stock trunk weighed.

your findings:

stock trunk with spoiler: 34 lbs
stock trunk without spoiler: 29 lbs
cf trunk: 20 lbs

---

i forget the exact weight of the maxima hood, i want to say it was somewhere from 45-49 lbs. i dont remember. back when i bought the redline max cf hood it was only 17 lbs lighter. not much but better than nothing. now i have also heard the fiber images cf hood was much much lighter than all the others, but cant recall the weight on that hood either, im bloody useless. at any rate i would love to have another cf hood and trunk but cant afford it. im not to worried about the cf look i would just have the items painted to match the car. living in NZ now the price would be outrageous to have items like this shipped over so to bad so sad.

i recently have been removing sound deadening in my maxima, to make up for some items i no longer have (racing seats and carbon fiber hood) i have removed 16.5 lbs so far and i may just get 20 lbs total when im done. when laying the carpet back down, and test driving, i cant hear a difference in cabin noise.

your right on driver weight, im working on getting 15 lbs off , that will equal 35 lbs of weight reduction for free. LOL !

I know for a fact that there should be alot of weight difference between the stock and C/F trunk. With my C/F trunk installed, it literally goes flying up whenever I release the latch to open. Even with my Stillen type II wing installed, it still opens all the way up but at a slower rate. I got mine from IonicDynamics....

I have both the CF hood and trunk. I'm in it for the weight savings. I weighed everything, before and after, but I forget the numbers. I did write them down however. I'll check tonight and report back tomorrow. IIRC, your numbers sound right. 15lbs here and 15 lbs there start adding up. Smaller, lightweight battery etc etc. Before you know it, there goes 100 lbs. I couldn't agree more with you guys about driver weight. Since last November, I have lost 25 lbs and now wiegh 175 lbs. 5 more pounds to go and I'm done.

What's the rule, for every 100lbs you shed, you drop .1 in the quarter mile?

that would be the rule. when the chariot arrived here in full trim, no race seats, no carbon fiber hood the car weighed 3009 lbs. i still plan to weigh it myself at a weigh station around here. i plan to remove the passenger seat at the track to counter the weight added back from selling the corbeau clubmans. To counter my cf hood i have already removed 16.5 lbs of sound deadening with a bit more to go. as for as weight, living in NZ I eating fruit, and nuts I have lost about 20-25 lbs, a dang mcdonalds big mac meal is right at 7 dollars. anyways, i hope i can get a 2.1 60 foot just once with the weight right to see where the chariot is now after all the traveling and trouble.
i feel good about the weight coming off the car , but wish i had more skills to do more stuff.

wizard you have a supra ^ dang man that owns !!

So did you remove the bracing, drill holes in it or? Got any pics?

I was thinking about trying to make a thin fiberglass hood and trunk but if you can remove that much may not be worth it.

I removed the all the bracing in it. I din't go past where the clips snap in for the carpet so that it would look stock. I will get some pics up toninght or tomorrow.

man i just put the stock interior in and shipped it over, didnt know how the cf hood and race seats would work getting the car registered over here, even turns out i think its is illegal to have the type i had in my maxima here.

i finally put the car on the scales, below 1/4 of a tank, and no spare or floormats: here are the results: did have full leather interior in car though.

So with full trim:
car/-spare/mats - 2,866 lbs. (this is how i will race with full trim)
car with driver - 3082 lbs.

when i can run the car with my DIY weight reduction mods it should be lighter still. just guessing:

remove passenger seat: 45 lbs
remove carpet: 17 lbs
remove center console: 7 lbs
remove back seat: 30 lbs
remove rear seat belts & passenger side : 9 lbs
remove rear deck: 4 lbs
remove rear door panels: 6 lbs
-----------------------
easy 118 lbs still to remove for race spec trim, will remove all this and see what she weighs then, and hey with under 200hp i do whatever it takes to bust a move out on the 1/4 mile strip !! lol

I used an air body saw and a cutting wheel.A dremel should work though.I wouldn't do this to a good trunk unless you wanted to add some bracing back in.If i push on the top of the trunk it will move in and sag but can be pushed back out.
