What are my options for a higher flow air filter? I'd like to avoid body panel alterations but use a cone type K&N or the like.

you can get a POPcharger from various companies, like Stillen, Jim Wolf Tech... do your research and find good prices.

I just got one and it works much better than I expected... nearly 25 miles per gallon in city... and it sounds wonderful.

 

Besides gas mileage, what other differneces have you noticed?

 

The engine will growl a little bit louder, but it's a nice deep rumbling sound....

 

Well with a pop charger you will notice a small loss in power in the lower part of the power band, but you will notice more power in the higher part. You should look in to getting the y pipe with the pop charger. That is the best combo.

 

if you have an auto max, the intake may give you a perceptible loss of low end power, making the car feel weaker off the line.

if you have a 5sp, you may not feel the loss (i don't) as the engine spools up pretty quickly in 1st and 2nd.

if you do get a pop-charger style, be sure that it uses a velocity stack and not just a simple adapter piece that changes it from the round filter to the square MAF housing area. the velocity stack will smooth the air as it goes into the MAF. the jwt is not CARB certified, so you'll need to take it out to get smog checks, while the stillen is carb approved but costs more. check the group buy sections.

you can also get cold air induction, which is basically a MAF mounted on the end of a tube that goes outside of the engine compartment. this helps because outside air is tpyically cooler than air under the hood which has been heated by the radiator, exhaust manifold, engine, etc... cold air is denser, and if the engine senses the cooler air, it can potentially make more power by compensating by the cooler denser air.

the ultimate intake system is the stillen supercharger, which is 50 state legal.

there is a debate over whether cold air induction, CAI, is better than a simple short pipe (pop charger) intake like the Stillen or Jim Wolf Technology. at high rpms the pop-charger seems to make more power because the air doesn't have to flow through as along of a pipe. right off the line, the cai is probably better.

i have the jwt and like how you cannot really hear the intake unless you get on the throttle. when you get on it, you can really hear it growl. i live in ca, but got the jwt because of price. it only takes like 15min to take it out and then go smog, and come back another 15minutes to put it back in.
