Aftermarket Brake Pads Squealing

I bought Axxis brake pads and RTP rotors. They were fine for about 2000 miles, but now at low speeds (< 30mph) they let off a high pitched whistle when barely pushing the brakes. Hard braking or higher speeds does not ellicity this behavior. Anyone got any fixes?

Temporary fix would be anti-squeal lube(?)...which pads did you buy? I know the Metal Master is known to squeal. Or you can try re-bedding the pads and rotors.

I think they are. I used Permatex High Temperature Anti-Seize Lubricant between the pad and the OEM shims before installing. Does that take any length of time to "setup" or can you just coat and install?

Should be just coat and install.. did you use any anti-squeal between the the shim and the caliper surfaces?

I used Permatex High Temperature Anti-Seize Lubricant
Can anyone recommend a good one, found locally (Pep-Boys, AutoZone, Advanced Auto) and I'll coat them thicker this time.

By the by, what causes the noise? I assume it is from the pad against the rotor, but how does the anti-squeal on the back of the pad help. Muffling?

I read that... your statement was:

I asked if you used any between the shim and the caliper, not the shim and pad itself... two different spots... ya?

Squealing can be the brakes dragging or the shims rubbing against the back of the pads or calipers.

No, its the anti-seize. That's what the idiot at the parts store told me to use when I asked for anti-squeal compound. = me

I think its time to do the brake job again... this time get this:
http://ken-co.com/crc/disc-brake-quiet.jpg

Get the one on the right (i.e. not the can). That's what I have always used, and never had any problems.

You'll need some brake cleaner to get all that anti-seize off the pads and shims!

Make sure you apply the right stuff between the shims and pads and on the shim surface between the shims and calipers.

I also dab a light coat of grease on the pad retaining clips - so that pads can slide more freely.

Just went to the store and got CRC Anti-Squeal in the spray can. I think this is the fastest time I have changed the pads. Just finished the passenger side and now putting the driver side back on. Funny how a little information goes a long way.

U want to go to your local Honda dealer and ask them for a tube of MOLY KOTE, that **** is da bomb as far as anti squealing agent goes. I use it at work on all brake jobs, then again I remember 7 or 8 years ago having the same problem with Axxis Metal Masters on my Sentra.

There's Mike again using his Honda products on Nissan cars

Mike - is that Moly Kote a lube or more of a rubberizing agent like the typical anti-squeal stuff out there..?

If it still squeals I'll just claim that it's not my fault - since you bought the spray stuff and I recommended the squeeze bottle

That should do the trick! I've never used the spray can - does it spray thick or runny? and what color?

Yeah, I had already picked it up before you responded. Searched around on the net and a couple of sites (bmw, acura, etc) recommended the spray can. It's gotta be better than grease.

So, I waited the suggested 10 min before putting the shims back on the pads and putting the caliper back together. How long should I wait before a test drive?

Read my post above yours will explain everything about Axxis, I will never purchase them again. IF you dont clean off the brake dust in span of 2 days it will take you 15 minutes to just wash the wheels with soap and water.

brake "rattle" after upgrade?

Hi,
Yes, newb here. I have to ask b/c I've been searching all day and my flippin' eyes hurt from reading so many articles. I changed my pads (oem->hawk hps) and put new rotors (powerslot) on about one month ago. I changed everything b/c the pedal was getting really soft and occasionally would do a 1/4 to 1/2 inch dip/drop under light to medium pressure. At my oil changes I was always told the brakes are fine. 65k and first brake mod, yet rears were still 90+% good and fronts were about 70+% good. Other than the typical time consuming dirty mess of doing my first brake job, everything seemed fine. I broke them in as directed and they were working great for a couple weeks. However, last week I developed this INSANELY annoying "rattle" in the driver wheel well. Seems to clink/rattle/bang when the wheel "drops" down on the road vs. hitting a bump. I do not hear the noise when the suspension absorbs anything. I am assuming this is coming from my brake job. It is NOT a squeal, sqwak, grind or any other constant noise. I used that CRC anti-squeal liberally on the back of the pad before inserting in the clip. Questions:
0) my pedal still feels too soft... need new brake lines?
1) do hawk hps pads require shims? (I did not reuse OEM shims and did not get new ones)
2) do you think this crazy rattle is from a loose pad? if yes, then why doesn't it rattle over ever bump (the speed bumps at work don't make it rattle)
3) do you think it is some other component failing?
4) why don't the Hawk front pads match the OEMs? Hawk sets only had 1 loop on the pad whereas OEM had this loop on each and every front pad:
