Gauges
The closest thing I seen for changing the colors of the vacuum display int he clocks and the climate controls is to take the unit apart and then under the front lense you install a magenta piece of film and it will make it appear to be white in color, you oculd also add a darker piece of red and it may appear red.
The white in my mind owudl look ebtter, searcha round for it It was in the 4th gen forums i read about it (i think)
BJ White

you can fit LEDs in those switches, but remember to use a resistor
actually it works pretty good, the leds fit into the light bulb sockets with some work. there isn't any room for resistors though, so just put the resistor in the actual wire harness going to the switch, and dont forget heat shrink

dont know if you will be able to find them in that size.
the climate control uses LEDs for the most part with only 2 bulbs for backlight IIRC.
LED's are brighter, use less electricity, and last longer. What's not to love

The work to put them in there!!!! But then again, no pain no gain.
For climate control, the only two readily changable led are the ones behind the fan speed control and temp control selector, just pull the cover off, pull the led out (they're simply pushed in there, and then trim a 3mm LED to about the same lead length as the stock one, make sure to get the + and - correct and you're good to go. The ones that are under the vent control are soldered onto the board, and have a plastic casing of sort covering them that refused to budge when I tried to do mine, so I left it alone. there are also two bulbs behind the vent selector thingy on the left most side of the control, and two bulbs on top in the middle of the control that actually lights the whole thing up at night.

this was one of the biggest pita i've ever tried in my car. For the two buLBS THAT are on top of the unit and iLluminate the buttons, I tried putting in LEDS but since thaY were not wide angLE(IMPOSSIBle to fit in there even with trimming of the hoLE) the LIGHT was super dim. I managed to convert the LITTle green LIGHTS into LEDS but they were bLINDINGly bright. My personaL CONClusion is that there are buiLT IN RESISTORS INTO THE board itsElf and when you try adding an addition resistor on the externaL WIRE you wiLl be killing THE aLREADY DIM LIGHT for the buttons. It's a lOOSE-loose situation man. ALSO REmember that the brighness of the LITTle green LIGHTS("on" when the button is pressed) is not controLABle from the dashboard so you'Ll go bLIND NO MATTER WHAT. Sad, but simpLY DON'T DO IT.
there are resistors already built into the board to power the OEM LEDs, the incandecent one runs off of the car's 12v supply, no intervention from the resistors. The reason that your lights are so dim is because the led bulbs are narrow beam, and this are not able to illuminate straight into the plexiglass pieces (that SURROUNDS the bulb) that helps illuminate the whole thing, you can try to bend the led so that it's useful beam focus is shining to the side, straight into the plexiglass pieces. You might still get cold spots though. Also, if the LEDs are too bright, step down the MCD level, eventually, you will find what you like. I personally put 5000 mcd in mine, and the glow are pleasing to the eyes.
To clear things up, I have only switch the LED on the selectors, and since I do not have a back up unit, I did not and will not attempt to desolder the OEM Leds that are on the vent control buttons and solder up new ones, just yet anyway....
i got a quick vid of my gauge this morning

Yup...It is a direct fit...plug-n- play...
dude thanks that is a relief i just caught that its a 145 mph speedo and i was like holy s*!* its wrong. thanks so much man im new to the maxima seen always liked-em but never owned one till now been a ford owner forever and even work as a ford parts mgr.so this is all new to me thanks a million
warning: a Maxima is different from a ford. The maxima gets you where you're going without the need for a tow truck
seriousness, the clusters are swappable, but remeber the red-line is different, and depending on if you have or got a M/T or A/T cluster some lights are different.
