Hi,

I purchased a set of Reverse EL Gauge faces for my '89 Maxima recently, and am having some uncertainties about the installation.
The set that I have each have power wires from each face leading to a power inverter which in turn has two wires (one red (12V) and one black (ground)) as well as an on/off switch which is supposed to get stuck to the dash somewhere. I am questioning which wire I should leech off of for the needed constant 12V and I'm looking at the cigarette lighter BUT do I attach it to the cigarette lighter wires at the actual cigarette lighter, or should I follow it to a point before the fuse?
Also, are there any reccomendations on how/where I should place these wires, power inverter and on/off switch? I don't want my dash to look like Johnny 5 blew his brains out in the driver's seat.

Is there an easy way to identify the wire(s) for the gauge lights?

I hooked up mine to the ashtray LIGHT WIRE that comes on onLY WITH THE HEADlights turned on. For the constant "possitive" I used the one for the radio. Hope this heLPS.

- schema vs wire color/stripes
- electron flow in a wire may be identified with a tester that has got a led & pin to puncture the insulator.

For 5$ tster dive into radio ? shack & pocket. For schema chck out Favorite Links at left, dive into my CDsite.

 

behind the gauge cluster, theres the plastic boardish thing. just follow the lines to the harness and see which wire it connects to on the harness. if your not too sure, get a 12v test light. find out whcih harness it goes to wen you turn on lights and test each wire individually.

 

Thanks for the help! I'm going to pick up one of these accompanied with a multimeter to find and tap into the proper wire.

 

...sorry, thats not gonna help here, still its handy at home. Its inductive tester for 120-240VAC. You need one for 12V, Direct Current =DC, with puncture pin & a wire to attach it to ground point.

So, I got everything installed and it looks very nice IMO, but now my gas gauge is reading less than what is known to be in there (I filled the tank the day before ).
Does anyone here know of a way to reset it? I've tried disconnecting the negative battery cable for a few minutes but that didn't work and looked to see if I blew any fuses installing it but they were all good.

to be honest i feel your pain only mine has been like that since i bought it. if i fill it it only shows 3/4 of a tank. i keep track of my milage and luckily the gas light does work if i have ignored my milage too much. but as far as resetting it i would love to know if it is possible too!
