Question: Do Junkyards Buy Cars
Question: Do Junkyards Buy Cars
Anyone know if a junk yark will buy a whole car(95 max se) that will not start. I need to get rid of it and i have no idea how to sell it. I cant part it out because i dont have the time or tools to do so... Any ideas on how to sell this?
Why don't you try and sell it in the . org classifieds?
How many miles are on it and what is wrong with it?
What mods/options does it have?
What is the condition of the body, interior, exhaust, suspension, tires, engine etc.?
It strikes me that you have learned a lot in the almost 3 years you have been on the .org. How did you manage to let it get in the state it is in today?

I've only been able to convince a wrecking yard once to pay me for a vehicle, it was a 11 yr. old Volvo and they gave me $400. Every other car they offered to remove it for free, would not pay. My mom just got rid of a 18 yr. old Volvo, same deal, no payment.
It's hard to separate fact from fiction when one hasn't done something first-hand. People in my office claim they have traded-in non-working cars for $4000-$6000--I don't see how that is possible. Also, they have claimed to have donated non-working cars to charity and gotten a receipt for several thousand.
I dunno, junk seems to be just that, junk. If you're not in a position to rebuild or wait 10 yrs. to part something out, maybe it's worthwhile to be done with it?

The bloody car will not start after a clutch was replaced. Everything else is in working order. I had to buy another car and the max is now becoming a burden. I wish i could part it out but like i mentioned earlier, i dont have the time nor tools...I did list it in the classified section but not a lot of feedback.
After my parents parted out most of their old Mitsu, they sold it to a salvage place as scrap metal. I think they got a couple hundred at best. Most junkyards just offered to tow it for free. You might consider donating to charity. My parents also did that with their old International Harvester Travelall (what's that?
asks the young guy

Hmm someone probably ruined one of the cas or pos sensors. Or messed up the timing ring on the flywheel. ie.. maybe removed it and didn't put it back.

Why didn't you go after the shop that installed the clutch at the time the job was done?
It started before you took it there did it not?
The car doesn't appear to be in that bad of shape. It needs the front bumper painted and some TLC and wouldn't be too bad if it ran.
It appears to me that you are your own worst enemy for not following up with the shop that installed the clutch.
Why don't you make a thread in the regional forum? Perhaps a knowledgeable member or two with some tools will be willing to give you a hand, given that it appears that you have thrown in the towel.
I question what your next car will be like after you have owned it for 5 years or so.

Bobo, what's with the questioning of my cars or property? i simply asked a question to which you can either give an unbiased answer or simply butt out and choose not to. The person who installed the clutch is a friend who did as a favor and it would be callous to go after him when the problem was not done intentionally.

I wouldn't get so defensive, he was just trying to help out. For not posting the full explanation of what happened, you leave everyone to come to there own conclusion. He gave you some good advise under the circumstance, on how to keep the car, versus giving it away to a junkyard. Think about it.
I'm not getting defensive, But you do not tell anyone what may happen down the road when you dont know the circumstances....Simply question=Simple answer.
I put this problem out on the org a couple of months back but no luck in getting it to work...I really do want to junk the car but we've put in too much time into trying to figure it out and took it to the dealer who wants major $$$ just to diagnos the problem...Its still at my friends shop who is still looking into it off and on...

Why don't you take it to a shop and have them figure out what is wrong and how much it is going to cost. If they can fix it for a decent price, you can sell it and make much more then a junk yard is going to give you. Good luck.
EDIT: I'm sure someone around Wappingers Falls, NY would be willing to take your car for some of those 5-speed parts

The originator of the thread was incensed with a comment I made about how well he might care for his next car. I thought it was a legitimate comment given his current scenario and I have nothing further to say on the subject.

If the car is an eyesore, the flip-side would be to take whatever you can get and be done with it. Life is too short to second guess all the time if we coulda gotten more, although it's human to do that. Me and my g/f went to buy a new bed this weekend, and they showed us a $1299 Serta. I said we'd like to pay $599, and they did that crazy thing talk to the mgr. etc. They said they'd take it--we weren't sure, went to another place and the dude said no way, that's a used bed he could do $700 for a floor model. We decided to go back and took it. Bed was delivered and it had the law tags on it, sealed in plastic, and was mfg. by Serta only 6 days prior. Long story short, we wonder if we could have just said we'd pay $300 and gotten it. Can't help but wonder how many people see $1299, offer $999, and pay $400 too much?
Thanks for the advise Frank Fontaine... i've gotten some offers but nothing reasonable... I've pretty much ruled out selling to a junkyard for such lowball deals you all have mentioned...The car is pretty much just sitting not in the way so i guess i'll bide my time to sell....But if anyone else is interested...please PM me..
Mdezzy....The car is in CT but i live in NY.

If you fix it, then drive it 'till it dies. No one will want it because of the 218K miles. The most you'll get is $1000. By the way, if you took it to dealership to diagnose the problem, you'd get charged only the diagnostic fee $75. You could have fixed your car elsewhere once you knew what the problem was. But you picked the more $$ way and got another car.
Junkyards will drag your *** about paying out a dime for it, likely they will want to charge you $150 for towing.
Since you bought another car, the best you can do is to sell it to someone on org. or donate to a charity. Charities don't care if its running or not. Pickup your local yellow pages, and make the phone call. Good luck

Good thread. I am in the same boat with my 97 C1500 full-size chevy that is dead. Only has 128k on it and everything else looks pretty good. Trying to decide where to get rid of it. With the law changes with donations to charities not sure if that is worth it. You have wait for them to sell it to figure how much you can write off on your taxes.
The dealership I talked to said they wouldn't give me much for it since they resell via whole sale. So a non-working car is not worth much to them.
