Hoisting a complete VE on a pallet.

Hoisting a complete VE on a pallet.

My JDM VE should be here soon, it is on a pallet and complete. Where do you guys hoist it from?

Ceiling mounted chain hoist is uber easy. Engine hoists work too. Hell Jeff and I have done it with 2 jacks (one supporting the engine, the other for balance) and our m@D wr3nCh1nG Sk1llz y0!

Oh actually hoisting the engine. Standard Jeffy Op is 1 chain around the front manifold. Another chain bolted to the back of the intake. Meet in the middle for some fancy chainwork which is then attached to the hoist's hook.


on that note, engine levelers/balancers are for women





Now I miss the Jeffy/Shawn car work

I got it out, but I will not say how, cause it is pretty redneck.

Lets just say 2k3 Dodge Hemi truck with a lift, driveway on a BIG slant, low garage door and complete engine with NO open holes.

I've done a F350, VE in the back.
First problem: hoist needed hydraulic fluid
Second problem: truck was a factory highboy on 33's
Third problem: The hoist couldn't lift the engine high enough to fit on the table I wanted to put it on. (ended up lifting the oppisite end of the table up, sliding under the motor as much as possible then lowering it, acting like a teeter totter or lever)

Only later did I realize I could have used a 2 post lift as an engine hoist

come-along, steel pipe in the attic, and a piece of chain through the ceiling..

when I'm pulling them out of the car in the driveway, I usually strap one of those stretchy nylon tow ropes around each exh manifold, then run it around the engine (alternator area) to the front of the engine and around the crank pulley. come back up with the hook, wrap it around the strap going to the manifolds, then back down and hook onto the alternator or A/C bracket area.

provides a very stable way to lift it. engine is impossible to "fall over" that way.. harder to tilt back and forth, but I only do it this way when I'm moving them around the shop.

when I'm actually pulling them out of the cars, I usually strap a chain around each exh manifold, then find a bolt at the front or back of the engine to strap one more chain so I can tilt it.

doesn't mean I haven't in the past , but just something people should be aware of.


Also, Engine levelers are for Women



out of all the different tools to hoist them, pulley setups are my personal preference.... sooo much easier than come along's. They also allow you to make fine adjustments, and just feel sturdy.
