HID Question

Currently I am stuck with stock 9004 halogens. I was planning on doing the 9007 mod early this spring. Then I thought about HID's. Would it be worth it to do the 9007 mod and then get a 9007 HID conversion kit, or is it good enough to just stick with 9004 and get a 9004 HID conversion kit?

Depending on whether or not I can find a good price for a decent kit somewhere, I may just stick with a converted 9007 halogens setup.
Any advice/experience is welcome.

Thanks

When it comes to our stock housings and HID's, no projector retrofit no care.

The reason i said that is because our housings are terrible to start with. Add HID's and you're glaring everything from here to god knows where. Other motorists are gonna hate you. If you want a sharp cut-off line and better usable light output, do a projector retrofit.

can't you just aim them? or does that only work on the halogens... projectors are just not in my budget. maybe i'm better off with a 9007 instead.

Everyone here knows how much the stock 9004 headlights SUCK. You can't see **** with only those. Thank goodness I have an SE so I had foglamps to supplement the headlights. The easiest thing to do (which I did) was just get a 9004 HID kit.

The first night I drove with the 9004 HIDs (I didn't touch the stock headlight adjustment yet), everyone on the road was highbeaming me. After I adjusted them very low, I've had at most three people high-beam me in the few years since that very first night after adjusting them. Since then, I don't use the foglamps anymore & I can still see the road ten times better (even with my current very low setting) than the stock 9004s + foglamps. I feel a thousand times safer now. I'll never go back to halogens again. =)

Moreover, there is definitely some glare from the 9004 HIDs, but having only three high beam me in several years is saying the glare after adjusting them isn't too bad. Heck, I've driven opposite many cop cars and they don't even high beam me. I'd say watch out for #1 first; your driving will be a lot safer. Screw the total of 3 people who high beam you in 3 years.

Our housing are bad for hid because of the glare. I think it is due to the bottom part of the headlight. The light is reflected to the back of the housing from the bulb and then reflected forward. The light that hits the bottom reflective part shoots up and produces glare. If you don't want to go with projectors you should at least read up on hid reflectors found in the 5th gen max, lexus IS300, etc.

I have posted about this but no one has tried it, it may not be a Glare.I.D set up if you paint the bottom of the housing black, that way it doesn't reflect and blind on coming drivers. Some people have used bulb shields that block the light reflecting down from the bulb. I personally would do the 9007 conversion first and see how you like it because you are going to pay almost $300 for a kit you may not get full light potential of. Hands down projector retrofit is the way to go for max lighting for your money. Do 9007 bulb upgrade and then save up to do it the right way
Read this before getting a glare.i.d set up.

Im running 7000k Hid's on my max as well when i installed them last week i was getting high beamed by everyone but if u aim them really low then u will see better on the road. Eyelids would also help. My buddy put them on the max and he doesnt have the AE mod done to his headlights and theres more glare on them. So eyelids, AE mod and aiming them low really reduces the glare. I'll take some pics of them tomm night and post them.

I heard theres a way to fabricate a shield on the bulb itself to cut down on the glare. Has anyone does this for the 9004 bulbs?

Here's a write-up about shielding d2s bulbs.
Mind you the only two true ways to put HID's in your
car are either in reflector housings designed for HID or
projectors. Anything else is dangerous to
other drivers.

IMO, driving with only the stock 9004's is dangerous to myself.

Then do the 9007 conversion.

Our car is ment for a reflection type of light. The light kind of bounces off the reflection of the light housing to shine full. HID's point. If you put HID's in them they will point, and reflect, as well as be bright as hell on everyone. The BEST way to put HID's in a maxima is projectors, and it looks much better. Here is one with BMW X5 projectors

And here you can find a wright up on how to do it.

Be sure to use 97-99 headlight housings, or cefireos, because they are clear.
