Should I do anything different from the 60 thousand mile tune up for a 120 thousand mile tune up? If so, what dose it cost to do? I am thinking about going to synthetic tranny fluid and oil. What should I expect to pay for a tranny flush and an oil flush (if there is such a thing)?

The term "60k mile tune up" refers to 60k miles from your last tune up so the 120K mile tune up is no different. A tranny flush with new synthetic ATF put in would be a great idea. I would also recommend buying a transmission cooler (see sticky post at top of 3rd gen forum). There is no such thing as an oil flush, just an oil change.

how often are we supposed to change teh timing belt?

 

that was gonna be my suggestion...if a VG time to change the timing belt...might as well throw in H20 pump, tensioner, thermostat and all drive belts while your in there

 

All that is part of the standard 60k mile maintenance schedule.

Not yet, but I will as soon as I get my oil tested. I want to prevent ticking madness.

I had it done to my 94 at around 80k. It cost $100, and you have to supply your own oil if you don't like them putting in generic dino stuff. It's a Bilstein Engine Flush machine. I had mine done at a Ford dealer of all places, and gave them Mobile 1 to put in.

I would only do it if you didn't purchase your car new and it has more than 30k on it. Who knows what previous owners used for oil and/or how often it was changed. It's more precautionary than anything else. 100k is also a good point to do this......

 

All of these are excellent suggestions.

In addition, I would:

Replace O2 sensor (if it hasn't been)
Replace upper/lower radiator hoses, heater hose, etc.....
Change fuel filter....

 

Thanks alot for the suggestions. I am going to check into this oil flush thing. How much should I expect to pay for the tranny flush? I have a five speed if that makes a difference. Should I replace certain engine gaskets also?

 

How mush oil and tranny fluid should I buy for a 5sp vg engine? I have a small oil leak I am going to get checked out before I start to do all of this stuff. I don't want to be dripping the expensive oil on the street. Thanks

 

With 400 miles to go until my next oil change and 5k till my 120k tuneup, here's what I was planning to do:

Oil Change: I want to switch to synthetic, so I am first going to drain my oil, then fill with 0W30 synth (according to the Oil Bible in the Links section of the org). I will run the car in high idle for 20 min, then drain and (hopefully) see the gunk come out w/ the thin synthetic. As an added cleaning agent, I was thinking of adding a tiny bit of the Marvel Magic Oil (sp?) that Brubenstein recommends for a tranny when I add the 'cleaning' oil . I'm not gonna do that till I hear it won't seize or fry my engine. Then I'll replace the filter and fill w/ 5W30 Mobil 1.

120k: Everything recommended above (basically), as well as get all of my sensors checked and/or replaced. Possiblt have my throttle body cleaned as well.

Any thoughts, especially w/ the 'homemade' oil flush, would be appreciated.

 

I have 7K miles to go before my 120K tune-up. During my last oil change, I added 1 full quart of Marvel Mystery Oil.

I have found no difference in starts or running of the engine. I guess I will find out when I do the next oil change. As far as running the engine for 20 min at high idle, I don't think that is good. Plus the Oil Bible states that it may not be a good idea for high mileage engines.

Just put in a quart of MMO in your next oil change, and it should help clean out any gunk in the engine.

If I had the money, I would definately go with the Bilstein Motor Flush, since that will loosen the crud buildup around the oil screen and pump.
