Someone attempts to steal my car…HELP!

Fist of all, sorry for the long thread but I have to provide all the info. Let me, first, give you some background information:

I drive to school 99% of the time because it takes me 2 hours to get there if I were to use public transportation. College does not have a parking lot for students and it is really a problem to find a spot close to the school. Therefore, I park my car approximately half of a mile away.

And the back ground on the person I suspect:
He goes to the same school. I know him for 2 years. I don’t really hang out with him, he got his own friends and I got my own. He is taking many classes that I take. Last year we used to help each other out, supply each other with studying material, etc. The guy loves cars, although does not know anything about them. He bought his first car a month earlier than I got mine. The car he bought is 1985 Porsche for $2,500 in non running conditions (the only word to describe how it runs how is - “sh!tty.”) Lately, he has been cutting many classes, so now I talk to him very rarely. Sometimes he calls me and asks about the exam dates and how my car is doing.

Here’s what happens today:
When I was in school I receive a call from him and conversation goes more or less like this:
Me – “Yo - what’s going on”
Him – “What’s up, dude, r u in school today?”
Me – “yea”
Him – “Ok…oh **** I forgot what I was ganna ask you about, peace…”

After I hang up it accurse to me that:
1. Half a year ago, he told me that he knows people who steal cars.
2. He hangs out with people who could barely finish high school and smoke weed.
3. He seems to be jealous that I got a better car and I didn’t even realize that.

After this conversation, I left school and took my car home.

Now I’m totally confused and don’t know what do. I can’t afford to pay for full insurance coverage or get an expansive alarm. It is also very inconvenient for me to use public transportation.

If I were 100% sure that his friends and him want to steal my car I would have found the money for both theft coverage and a car alarm. But I got no proof –which, basically, does not let me sleep at night (and think about the classes in school)

Any suggestions on what I should do will be greatly appreciated,

Thanks in advance

no not yet, basically, it looks like he called me to find out if the car was parked unattended at that moment. Since I drove back home after the call, he could not steal it today but he might attempt to do it again.

ok, do this, when u get to school, pull out your fuel pump fuse and take it with you... chances are if he tries to break in/pop ignition, he's gonna be in too much of a hurry to diagnose why its not freakin starting and give up...

Simple, free way of securing your car... unless they tow it.

An excellant idea .. and fella you are sounding just slightly a bit paranoid... "chill" , pull the fuse and it will do wonders for your tension if nothing else...

next time you talk to him tell him you bought a really good alarm...

if you can't afford one, you can afford to atleast get a red led and hook it up to blink or something. even if that sounds ghetto, i'd rather appear that i had one than not.

if i were you, i'd save up and call pearlmax or whatever his name is because he installs alarms and whatever for people in your area and gives good deals. i wouldn't sweat it too much going on that phone call alone, goodluck!

I think your being paranoid. But, just be like out of no where just be like yea, I think someone is trying to steal my car. When I came outside there was some guy that looked like he was trying to break in, so now I have an alarm on it.

Or something like that

EDIT: and I don't mean to sound mean to you or your car in anyway, but there arn't better cars to steal at your school? If he really wants a nice stolen car there are better ones than an 2000 5spd. Just my .02

1. he loves cars and he is jealous that I got a better car
2. he behaves a little odd lately after the death of his father a couple months ago
3. he got connections with car thieves
4. a very strange phone call
This is way more than enough to start doing something

True, but since we both were trying to make enough money to get good cars and my car turned out to be better than his, he might do that just because he is jealous.

The title of your thread says "Someone attempts to steal my car, help!" But no one has actually attempted to steal your car, have they? Why don't you just find somewhere else to park? Simple solution

Thanks a lot for the help guys, after reading you replies I think I’m ganna do this: I will take the bus for the first couple of days to let him, hopefully, change his mind, and I’m ganna mention to him that I decided that it is unsafe to leave that car without some kind of security system and that I will not drive my car before I actually install something. (I think I will really either borrow my parents money and get an alarm or install some kind of switch which nobody knows of)

Any other ideas a still welcome though… as a couple of you have mentioned I need to chill – the more replies I’m getting the more I seem to relax lol

No offence, but you don’t know downtown Brooklyn (where my school is)
I can either, park where I usually leave my car or pay $20 a day and watch valets abuse my manual tranny.

Oh my god, my cell phone rang the other day too. It was a friend of mine who smashed up his car and can't get it fixed because he has no insurance.

I guess he's gonna steel my car now.

That's paranoid/weed smoking behavior to me, shady acting makes me paranoid, i'd just pull the fuse and call it a day. With a 2000 you can't afford NOT to put an alarm on it. Parking it in Brookyln too, easy target. Park it in the valet lot yourself and retrieve it yourself if they will let you. If they do, pull the fuse everytime. A pedal lock would work well too.

Those who got nothing to suggest, please keep you comments to yourself. Perhaps I did not explain it clear enough that the possibility of him attempting to steal my car is very high. Nobody here knows what kind of person he really is. If you don’t believe me, I don’t need you comments!

buy an alarm, you can steal our cars with a damn flathead screwdriver without an alarm. Don't let too many people know your car doesnt have an alarm either. There are lots of people who would love to have a 2k max to whip around when they're bored. What you can do for cheap:

install glass sensor in the stock alarm
install tilt sensor in the stock alarm
****KILL SWITCH*****<- you can do it for 5 bucks, best theft deterrent for the money.
Buy a no-name ebay alarm and install motion sensor
-Remove the fuel pump relay whenever you leave your car.

...or you can just get theft coverage for your car, i dont know how you can leave your car in Brooklyn without it. How many threads have there been within the last month that said their cars were stolen in brooklyn?

If he indeed is planning to steal your car, he must be one of the DUMBEST SOBs out there.

Why steal a 2000 maxima anyway? Steal something nicer or whatever.

The stock alarm on the max doesn't do crap, and good luck upgrading it without replacement. You need to get a good aftermarket alarm. Check out www.directed.com for a wide selection of alarms and sensors. They make viper, clifford, etc. None better IMO.

just rig up a kill switch so that you have to have something on when you start it up......there is a cigaretts lighter hook up or something.....you have to have your cigarette lighter pushed in to start your car or something like that...just remember to carry an extra in your trunk. lOL

You may want to consider finding a way to afford full coverage. I have it and I have a '92. This covers your tail in the event it grows legs or gets wrecked.

Hire a midget to hide in the trunk and when this guy steals your car, the midget will climb into the passengers compartment and taser the f.ucker when he stops at a red light.

Haha. You go to either City Tech or Polytech and you park underneath the BQE, don't you? I used to go to City Tech and pay for a monthly pass at the Edison Parking lot. I always watched the guys park my car, because I've seen them do some stupid **** sometimes.

I also used to park underneath the BQE and always walked back to my car paranoid as hell, thinking my car would be either stolen or seriously f-ed up.

well today i was messing around with my interior out of boredom, and honestly without a killswitch, our cars are gone. and even if thats the case, if he really has something against you (which you make it sound like), say he cant get the car to run. ok. but he still might mess it up out of "jealousy". do the smart thing, and opt for the insurance. sooner or later something will happen and why not be ready for it. the extra hundred or so a year to get your car back JUST IN CASE it grows legs is money well spent. just my .02

Edit: Oh BTW, you dont even need to bring an extra fuse, there are extra fuses on the side of the panel lol!

This is why you should NEVER tell people around school about your car. Doesn't matter if it's your friend or enemy or classmate. This is a lesson for you to keep your mouth shut if you can't handle the heat. After blabbing about your car now look at you, paranoid as hell. Come on dude, you're from NY, you should know the rules of keeping your mouth shut.
