1st and 2nd gear, toast.....

On the way home from the tire shop, just put stock wheels on because I busted one of my 17's, I went to downshift from 3rd to 2nd and it wouldn't go into gear. I was thinking, there goes my second gear, this sucks. Luckily I was only a block from my house, and it's all down hill. When I parked my car at my house, I tried to put it into 1st gear and it wouldn't work either. 3rd-5th and reverse still work so I know it's not my slave or master cylinder. I've been expecting my tranny to go out for a little while because I noticed my input shaft bearing was shot. It just sucks that it did actually go out.

I think I'm just going to part it out. Not sure just yet.

That is exactly what my tranny did....I was coming home from the store and when i pulled into the driveway [i usually put it in second to climb my driveway] and it would not go into first or second anymore..luckily i already had a good used tranny ready to put in......

This scares me. Just finished a 5 speed swap. Im assuming the tranny is org, and if so it has 217K miles. Clutch only has a few hundred but thats diffrent. awsome though.

GL with the tranny. If you part it out, lmk i want the VLSD!

funny u mention that...i went through the seemingly EXACT symptoms and i bled the clutch hydraulics and found a marked improvement. the board is kinda split as to what is causing the rest of the problem - a tie between the clutch and the tranny.

also, how did u come to notice that ur input shaft bearing was shot?

Signs of the input shaft bearing going out is a grinding sound when the car is in gear going down the road, and in neutral with the clutch let out....Also when the tranny is about to die you will start having diffuculty getting to go into gear....

The grinding sound is louder in 1st thru 3rd gear...

dude, don't freak out about this yet.
the 1-2 lockout is common when your input bearings are shot. what happens is the chunks coming off the bearing get stuck in the shift linkage and prevent you from being able to move the shifter into gear.

See all these metal chunks:

they get stuck in here:
http://blehmco.com/pics/car/tranny/IM001411.JPG

get the tranny rebuilt and call it a day. this is a $100 fix if you buy the parts and do it yourself.

remove tranny, disassemble, clean out, replace broken parts, reassemble, install transmission.

That's exactly what I thought happened. I'm not freaking out and I'm not parting out the car just because tranny needs to be rebuilt. I'm buying Jeff's car this weekend (most likely). I was already planning on parting my car out, even though I think I have a little more work (ALOT of stereo stuff, motor mounts, crossmember, and interior work) into my car than he does but my car needs more work (to be complete) than his does. We both have very similar mods, but my car needs more body and interior work than his does. I want to part my car out, rebuild my motor and tranny, and put the freshly built motor and tranny into Jeff's car.

Matt, do you know how much it cost to have the tranny cryo'd/shotpeened?

Don't waste your time. you're looking at several hundred bucks, and it's not goign to do a damn thing to save the weakest parts of these trannies.
they don't break gears, they eat bearings. nothing you can do about that.

It won't help even if it's turbo (300+whp)?

when jeffs engine blows why not just rebuild that one... anyway, swap the parts and mods you want from your car into his and i'll buy the stock remains of yours w/broken transmission...

The main reason I want to part it out is because I'm selling (most) all of my mods. Unless you can give me a good price, I'll be parting it out. I'm defintely keeping the motor because I want to rebuild it for turbo then put it in jeff's car with very little down time.

so are you going to buy a 3rd maxima when the input shaft bearing in jeffs tranny blows to pieces after doing the turbo swap? it will most likely happen repeatedly if you go turbo.

how many miles are on the car and how much do you want for it? with or without certain mods.. i don't care about shift *****, sway bars, intake, ect... take all that stuff off if you want. flywheel/springs and struts would stay on i assume. do you have the stock counterparts for your mods?

I have an extra motor. #5 cylinder is low on compression though. Probably a ring on that one.

No, I won't buy a 3rd maxima if I blow up jeff's tranny. This is why I want to keep my motor/tranny (I'll have an extra rebuilt tranny ready when it does blow up). I'm still not sure if I'm going to turbo it anyway.

What do you need? I don't want to sell it whole so please stop asking me.

you never mentioned anything about fixing your transmission. in fact, this thread is all about the fact that you're NOT going to fix your transmission and buy jeffs car instead. and before you get all testy about the fact that i asked you how much you want to sell it for, you should realize that in your previous post you mentioned that you would do it if the price was right. as far as what i need? i've told you what i need, i couldn't care less about your precious mods that you've slapped on.

I'm not mad....

If you read what I stated earlier, you'll see what I said about keeping the motor and tranny.

I just don't think anyone will pay the amount I want for the car (plus shipping?).

I'll pm you.
