Anyone rebuild the A/C compressor or clutch themselves?

OK...first things first. I did search and I haven't found anything on rebuilding an A/C compressor clutch.

My A/C clutch is making a bad bearing noise. This only happens when the A/C compressor is off. When it's on, there is little noise, but I think that's a unrelated issue (belt tensioner). anyways, I was wondering if anyone has taken the A/C clutch off and replaced the bearings. If so, is there anything other than the bearings that might need replacement. Anyone rebuild the A/C compressor themselves?

If this is going to be a big effort, I guess I'll just buy a new A/C compressor and clutch. I just hate spending money on maintainance and repair parts.

I tried to find out the same with no results,my car is so loud now it's embarrasing with the supercharger on there makes it alot louder.
I wonder if there is a way to bypass it with a shorter belt and if anyone had the belt #,
I'm sending my kid to fla and need to save some money also.

what I might do is the following: take out A/C compressor and bypass the system using a shorter belt, use clutch tool to remove clutch, somehow see if it's possible to press out bearings, then find out if I can press in new bearings, reinstall and find out if that gets rid of the noise. If not, I guess I'll bit the bullet and just buy a new one. Sure...technically I can barely afford it. I just don't like having to wipe my butt with pinecones for the next couple months. Sometimes I wish I was still renting.

I have the same issue with my Compressor. When engaged, there is almost no sound. When disengaged I get that nice bearing grind going on. I have just replaced the belts in my car and that is when I discovered it. I too have not been able to find out if anyone has successfully replaced this bearing.

This is definitely doable. I had the same problem and ended up getting a shorter belt that by passed the compressor all together. I ghetto'd it- got a length of speaker wire, ran it around the crank to the alternator, marked the length off and took it to autozone. I dont have the belt # with me but it should be on the actual belt if its not worn off. I'll check tomorrow and post..

Mine was toast. I asked a few mechanics and from what I was told, the clutch is non-serviceable. I ended up getting a shorter belt and bypassing the compressor. I don't remember the length of the short belt, it should be in the stickies. That's where I found the info last time I looked. I found several used compressors at the local wrecker for about $95, it has around $70k on it. I'll get one later on.

Well...that's another project I can scratch off the list. I installed an A/C compressor clutch bearing. I would rate the project medium/difficult, as I can picture many people f'ing it up (unless of course you have access to a hydraulic press). My A/C compressor now sounds like nothing. It's dead silent. I took many pictures. The double row bearing for the A/C is available at NAPA for $25ish. I can get you all the part number later. I also did the drive belt pulley bearing too. NAPA doesn't carry the shielded version of the 6301 series bearings. Total time for both = 2 hours. Saved money = $750+. Total spent on parts= $35. Total spent on tools= $50. It sure feels great! (just like when I first discovered that the knock sensor can be changed without removing the intake plenum. I got quoted $550, and I did it myself for $125).

Wow.........that's great info. I had no idea the clutch bearings can be replaced. The dealer said it couldn't, I guess that is why I never ever take my car to them. Looking forward to your write-up and part numbers. :

Update
I have the v1 supercharger with the 3.33" wheel.
I bypassed my A.C. compressor (until springtime) and used the napa belt#060620 It's 62-5/8" long and fit perfect.
Just incase anyone with a SC needs to know.
Car is nice and quiet compared to how it sounded:>)

Do you have the photo or data of the puller to get the clutch disk out of the assy and can get out the bearing??

I picked up a compressor and clutch at a salvage yard and took it home. The bearing was turning freely as opposed to the noisy bearing on the car. Once home I removed the clutch from the car and swapped in the clutch from the salvage yard. I watched the following video to learn how to take apart the clutch. I did not need to use a puller even though there was a small amount of rust on the shaft splines. Both A/C clutches were held in place with a 10mm bolt so no cutting was necessary.
