You gotta jump on the touchscreen the ones from eBay or anything they recommend from mp3car.com. It has to be of high resolution or else you get grainy graphics from the computer. You can also do a poor man's search on "carputer". I think Iron Scimitar was working on one, he could probably give you some good suggestions.

Wait! Xenarc is by far the best. Not too toot my horn but I've been in the carpc scene since 99 and have been through character lcds, composite only non touchscreen tft lcds, and within the past 2 years, touchscreen vga lcds.

I can wholeheartedly recommend Xenarc over the Lilliputs. Lilliputs are chosen only because of the price, but as we all know, lower price doesn't always mean better quality.

Anyway, I've got a Gain in my 02 Maxima SE, which is a Xenarc knock off, but in the next couple months I"ll be getting the latest Xenarc 7" with the 5 wire resistive touchscreen and higher NITS (brightness).

http://www.maximapc.com is my site and also my latest endeavors have been moved to my flickr "photo blog" at either megalithic.org for the latest 9 , or http://www.flickr.com/photos/smesser/sets/1096066/ for the direct link to my maximapc photoset.

I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have because this is for me what performance is for many of you and your maximas.

The **** is a Griffin Powermate (http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/powermate/) and I use it for quick interaction with the computer; i.e. volume, track change and pause/play.

There is also another brand called Linitx, but it is a Lilliput knock off and I've only seen the Europeans on mp3car.com use them.

Anyway, since, I'm guessing you plan on sticking with the 7" models, those are the big two brands to really choose from.

Good luck to you and your decision.

get a lilliput, they're just abou as good as the xenarc now. They were flakey before due to power controller board issues, but that isue has been taken care of.

Also, the lilliput slips right into the the double din area for the maxima.

yeah, that **** is pretty cool.. but how do you select through different controls?... like say its on volume.. how would you make it switch to control the chapter of a dvd or place in a song? seems cool.

the lilliput and xenarc are for all intents and purposes the same thing - the xenarc has a few more "features" than the lillliput - if you haven't dealt with touchscreens before and plan on taking it out of its casing then i'd recommend the xenarc

Do the touchscreens have a shorter lifespan than say a regular microvision? I wonder if constantly touching it fatigues it? Anybody have pics of the Liliput or Xenarc installed?

Cheap-o screens have a shorter lifespan, as do some of the older lilliputs and rebadged eBay stuff. I've purchased 3 lilliputs over the last year for my cars and only one of them started acting up after a while (of course, the older cheaper ebay one ).

It's not a big deal though... you can replace the touchscreen yourself and it only costs about $50.

I have a 7" lilliput on both my cars now and so far so good... the Maxima one started acting up a little while ago but it was only because of a loose cable. You can check out some recent pictures starting around post 45 on this thread: http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=402728&page=3

Thanks for the knowledge, your project looks great! They've gotten a long ways with these since I remember first seeing full size deskops in cars years ago. I read a ton on mp3car.com and all I can say is...wow

I just got a Xenarc 7" touchscreen. It looks pretty damn good and it has 2 composite video inputs in addition to the vga input. I just hope it can survive our cold Winnipeg winters...I guess I'l find out soon.
