Pics of my newest mod - concave hood!

To make a long story short some things transpired on my way to class this morning that caused me to have to jump out of my car quickly and pop the hood open then jump back in the car having forgotten to latch it completely. I then accelerated to about 40mph to complete my newest mod. The concave hood. Convex hoods are sooooooooooo 2005. This is the newest style for 2006. Get yours today

Seriously though here it is in all it's stupidity.

My car is wired with a pushbutton start to prevent flooding from the oversized injectors at startup. I was cleaning up some wiring in the center console and managed to break one of the leads off of the pushbutton, thus I couldn't connect the ignition wires to the button. So I had to cannibalize my nitrous switch and use that as the starter button for my car, except now it's a switch that has to be turned on and turned off actively, as opposed to a button which you just push when you need to engage the starter and then release when the car is started.

So I was heading to class this morning and got on the gas to pass a moving truck before I got stuck behind it for 3 miles of no passing zone. In the process of shifting apparently I flipped the starter switch on, but I didn't realize this until much later.

My first thought was that I had grenaded the turbo and that the compressor blades were scraping against the compressor housing. There was a horrible, super loud metal on metal screeching sound coming from the engine bay. I pulled over and left the car running and looked at the turbo inlet. Blades were still spinning normally and the sound didn't seem like it was coming from that area anyways. Next thought was the power steering pulley/pump because I'd been getting some PS belt squeal when it's cold. That seemed to be spinning OK. Next thought scared me in that I thought it might be coming from inside the engine. So I quickly set the hood down and shut the car off.

The noise quit immediately. Being stranded as I was but only a couple miles from home I decided I might as well fire it up and try to get back home assuming the engine was toast. I turn the key to "on" and to my surprise the car starts by itself without me engaging the starter switch. Then it hit me that the noise was the starter grinding against the flywheel teeth trying to engage the starter while I was moving. Excited that I had figured out the problem, and excited that there were no more strange noises coming from my car, I put on my seatbelt and continued on to class. A few hundred feet down the road at about 40mph the hood that I had just set down (and forgot to latch in my frantic attempt to find out what was going to explode on my car) flips up against the windshield.

About 2 miles I'd say. Too long, but no damage that I can discern at this point. I was late for a test or I'd have stopped earlier. Initially I thought it was the turbo grenading, and my thought was "well if the turbo is shredding itself there's nothing I can really do about it, might as well continue to class" then a minute later I though "hmm if the turbo is shredding itself I'd REALLY not like to have the metal shreds going through my engine" so I decided to stop (as if my engine wouldn't have been toast by this point anyways lol).

thankfully you didn't get in an accident or hurt when that hood came up on you. The real question here is did your professor believe your excuse for being late?

at first i thought it was from the sheer force of acceleration lol, but good thing is the roof and windshield is still intact.but come to think of it 40mph isnt enough wind to pull the hood up like that unless 1 and 2 was 0-60 in 3 seconds.

Nah I wasn't accelerating fast, just normal acceleration. It's enough to blow the hood back trust me lol. It wasn't latched at all, I just set it on the latch because I had planned on going back under the hood but forgot in the heat of the moment.

It took 60 mph for my hood to come up.

And it's way more fun for it to happen at the dragstrip in front of a whole bunch of people who hate the imports running there to begin with.

Wow, I've heard these stories regarding CF hoods but I think you are the first to do this to a metal hood! Congrats. I thought the metal hoods were heavy enough to engage at least the secondary latch just by its weight alone. I guess not??

You do not seem to have the greatest luck with hoods. I remember a thread a while back where you had a mishap with the CF one (a deer hit it or something). Anyhow just swap the white max's hood to this car and get it painted. Then use a piece of sheet metal and duct tape it over the white max engine bay.

Couple years ago when I had one of the first FI carbon fiber hoods I had it propped up with a hockey stick at the track, and while I was in the stands the wind caught it and slammed it back against my windshield, breaking the windshield, damaging the hood a little bit on the edges. Then later I hit a deer and it was destroyed, frame totally ripped apart and the CF surface all cracked up, so I took it off and ran it over with a Chevy 3500 duallie pickup truck and threw it in a dumpster.

I'm going to get a CF hood again. I wanted one anyways and now I don't really have a choice. CF hoods save about 30lbs over stock hoods, though that wasn't a stock OEM hood, it was an aftermarket hood.
