473 miles on 1 tank of gas - SWEET!

Went on a 600 mile round trip from NJ to Provincetown MA this past weekend. It was nice and cool outside and we all know the VQ loves cold air I was doing between 75 and 80 as much as possible. Two of us in the car, with luggage (we didn't pack light either) the car just seemed to run excellent. I've been using BP Amoco Ultimate gas lately and do feel an improvement in power with that gas. I went 473 miles until the fuel light finally came on. That was the most I've ever gone on 1 tank of gas. I guess at 103,000 miles, the VQ has finally broke in.

The ride on my new suspension set up was nothing short of silky smooth. My auto-magic Max has 5 speed springs up front which has lowered the front of my car by about 1/3 of an inch making the gaps equal all around. The Illuminas really shine at the "stock" ride height. I had also put the stock 5 spokes back on which are wrapped with Dunlop Sport A2's. Honestly, I don't think I'll ever lower my car again, it rides way to good right now.

Im getting ready for a little road trip. Roughly 250 miles each way, so im hoping to get that all under a tank and a 1/4. I think its doable. Last time I took a road trip I averaged 30mpg w/ a few 120mph sprints. I'll be by myself so there should be no extra load in the car. Plus it'll be nice and cool out.

damn, thats sweet! I can only wish for that mileage...my car is running rich with the added headers & exhaust...I know its running super rich becuz I actually blow flames out my exhaust like a turbo car (see signature)

best I ever got on highway is like 325 miles (22mpg)...the best I ever got in the city was like 250 (17mpg)...currently, I do all city with alot of stop & go....my mpg has dropped to 16

I don't blame my car for running so rich...its just a safety measure from the ecu I guess

Nice when I came home from IN I got close to 500 miles on 1 tank. It was nice considering this beast is running with 211K on here. I am getting about 430 miles now non-interstate driving

What suspension setup you got?

Yes most of us run premium, that is what it recommends. I do. Premium is all you should be running.

On average, with all highway driving, I think all 4th Gens should get around 500mpt, because the dealership sticker says that it gets 28mpg on highway miles, so 28*18.5=518. Of course this varies from car to car.

Hey why did you go back to stock height? Just wondering, cause I'm thinking of the same thing. Taking H&R's off and going back to stock SE springs with the illumina's. I took my max up to the mountains for the first time with the H&R's and Bamm!! The Max was smokin thru the corners. Man that was fun running the VQ thru the paces.
But these potholes in Atlanta are just too much.

I get at least 440 miles per tank doing average of 40 mph. Highway I can go 70 mph and still get 480+ miles per tank.

I keep saying it, the vq is the best v6 out there. 4th gen is a collector's car...just wait.

Right now I have 258,000+ miles on it and it's smooth sailing. Doesn't feel like an old car until I go over brick paved road.

i get about 350 a tank with cruise control set to 75, though i don't drive far after the "oh-cr*p-almost-outta-gas" light comes on. usually i fill up when i'm down to a quarter of a tank... don't want to suck up any sediment.
wish i got better mileage like some of you folks, but the car drives like a champ so i ain't gonna complain!

I just took a trip from NYC down to Balitmore, MD this weekend. I got a little more than 27 mpg using 87 octane gas and cruise control at 80 mph. My car has 140k miles on it.

When I'm driving around NYC I usually get 18-20 mpg mixed driving. Its nice to get such high milage once and a while!

Best I've gotten was ~440 to the tank, 93 octane, with maybe 10 cumulative minutes of WOT (one bringing me up to ~127 MPH).

There's quite a few TN members here, check regional.

has anyone tried to add a few oz of acetone to the gas for added mileage? There's alot more spec on that lately w/gas prices up, but the ethanol they add here is supposed to negate most of the benefits.

I have gotten 550 miles at least 3 times and 500 plus another 10 or 12 times on road trips, but that is at a maximum speed of 75 mph. I will exceed 400 miles on my current tank with a mix of 60% highway/40% city driving.

You should be able to go more than 20 miles once the light comes on without running out of gas.

The 500 miles plus tanks mentioned above have all been that way.

Thanks Nismos14, I didn't know that it was rated at 55mph, you're right, who does 55mph on the highway?

Yep... who knows though, nowadays with higher speed limits maybe things will be tested/manufactured differently.

I honestly dont think that 55mph is exactly the most efficient speed. That was the most efficient speed back in 1974, hence the 55mph highway speed limits set back then. The efficiency of the VQ can easily get great mileage above 55mph. I got 30mpg going an average 75-80mph. Thats an exact measurement between fillups, and that was actually mixed with 5% city driving and a few 120mph sprints. The exact was like 30.325235 something MPG after I filled up the tank. Then again, being lowered an inch and a half and the ypipe im sure make for somewhat better mileage.

what would help get better gas mileage? I know changing fuel filter, spark plugs, etc. normal tune up stuff. Anything else you can suggest?

I got 467 miles on a full tank going to/from Pismo Beach. I also had 2 passengers, and a whole trunk and back seat full of crap. I was following my uncles trailer going about 50-70 mph to/from with no stop. The trip was only a total of 430 miles, but I got the extra 47 miles going to/from work the next day.

Think the best I've ever gotten was around 550 on one tank. That was all highway driving to school and back (full trip is about 660, wish i could do that on one tank). Beyond that I usually average 400+.

I have the same car as you with a 5-speed, and I would consider that mileage to be disgusting. I get almost that in city driving in rush hour.

You must drive your car as if you owned Exxon!
