03 Max Fog Lights/Lamin-X --- Rant

Both my fog lights were busted. The passenger side had the glass completly gone and the driver side had 3 cracks. Last weekend, I purchased a replacement fog light for just the passenger side and put lamin-x it. I put as well as on the cracked one. Today I noticed that the new one(passenger side) is cracked again! What freakin gives??????? Yea its nice that they are now both cracked so they match each other but this is very frustrating. I'm wondering if anyone has had experience with Lamin-X. They have a 5 year guarentee. I am getting ready to get in touch w/them and see what they say but before I do that, I wanted to post on here and see if anyone has any input on this situation.

Thanks

I currently have the 40-mil clear Lamin-X on my foglights and the clear 20-mil on my headlights and couldnt be happier. If it makes you feel better, I dont think it was the Lamin-X that cracked your lens. I recently replaced my passenger fog light since it was cracked to hell. I purchased a OEM replacement from usautoparts.com and put the Lamin-X on it before I installed it on the car at the same time putting the Lamin-X on my uncracked driver's side foglight. Off the bat I noticed that the passenger fog light was aimed wrong (easily fixed my turning the white screw behind the housing.) Well I also noticed that the I was getting a distinct burnt mark on the lens. A few days later, the lens was cracked. I was pissed to say the least. I thought it had been cracked by a rock. I rode with it like that for a week or two and noticed the burn mark getting bigger and darker. This is when I realized it was a crappy foglight that had the metal shroud positioned too close to the lens. It was getting rediculously hot, actually burning the Lamin-X (causing the burn mark) and eventually cracking the lens. I know its not the Lamin-X because I have it on my driver's side fog light housing. I called and complained to usautoparts.com and they are shipping me a new fog light housing. Now all I have to do is call Lamin-X and see if they will sell me a single precut 40-mil thick foglight film. Hopefully they will. Anyhow, just thought Id share my experience. Hope it helps.

I had the PIAA's in my fogs, both lenses cracked, no sign of impact, put laminex on them, they burned. I put OEM bulbs in, replaced laminex, no burning. PIAA's run extremely hot, I don't care what anyone says...

I have had PIAA GT-X in the whole time and the drivers side is not burnt, cracked, or running hot. I still think it was the fog light. I will receive the replacement fog light, install a new layer of Lamin-X, reinstall the PIAA GT-X bulb and let you all know what happens. Im thinking nothing since that is exactly how my drivers side is and it looks and performs perfect.

Thanks for the responses. I obviously don't think Lamin-X itself caused the cracks but I am disappointed that Lamin-X did'nt protect against the cracks. Especially being as this was only 1 week in!

It sounds like the heat from the bulb is what's causing the cracks. I have had other cars w/fog lights and cracking lenses was never a prob till I got the max. It prob is the heat.

I've heard of PIAA lights creating enuff heat to cause problems but never stock lights (which is what I have).

As I said, since I put the OEM bulbs back and replaced the Laminex there has been no burning (browning). If you look at the overall design, it's easy to see there is no airflow in or around the foglight assembly as it sits in it's location. I just hope someone at Nissan has the good sense to screen this forum and other Nissan based forums to see what owners like dislike etc., to improve things. I still feel that in all the Max is a great car though...

I think thats true. I had stock bulbs in my 02 and never had a cracking problem. Put piaa in my 03 and the driver side is now cracked. I am gonna replace the driver side and put the stock bulbs back in.........the high heat is killing the lense...

FWIW, I contacted lamin-x and they offered to send me new lamin-x for free should I choose to replace the fog lights. At this point, however, I think i'll just leave the cracked fog light w/laminx covering it and hope it holds together. I don't want to keep replacing only to have them crack again.

p.s i've only had stock bulbs in there.

Called Lamin-X this morning to get replacement film for my foglight housing that I received yesterday. I told them about it burning on one housing but not burning on the other. Also that BOTH foglight housings cracked with the Lamin-X on it. She said she would be sending me out a replacement 20-mil thick film foglight kit, to replace the 40-mil kit I currently. She said the thinkness may have something to do with the heat. I'll update when I get it in. Im planning on it cracking, but maybe I'l get suprised!
