idle is too high, how to fix?

Currently my 95 GXE is idleing at 1K. I have adjusted the idle screw on the IACV all the way down and this is as low as it will go. So what gives? Is the idle control unit bad? It is working because when I loosen the plastic screw the idle goes up. I do have an extra idle air set up, but I just wanted to get some opinions before I did this. I would like to have this car idleing around 700 when it is warm.

I have the same problem, but only after I changed my PCV valve, knock sensor, and cleaned my TB. The IACV screw you mention... is that the screw right next to the throttle cable? That will adjust your idle speed as well. Though, that screw is not plastic and the idle is supposed to get lower when the screw is loosened. Maybe your IACV or TB needs to be cleaned.

There's a little screw and nut on the throttle body that controls how far the throttle plate can close. I moved that like an eighth of an inch once and it had my idle at like 2500rpm. Adjust that. I think the nut is 7 or 8mm so it's really small, as is the screw. Make sure to tighten the nut back down against the TB after you adjust the screw otherwise the screw will move under vibration after a while and who know where your idle will be then.

Same problem here. Mine always wandered a little bit high and the previous owner said that the intake manifold gasket was cracking after being re-used after a fuel injector replacement.

But recently I cleaned the Throttle Body and tightened up the air box fittings and the idle went sky-high, it would range from 1500-2000rpm's at all times. I adjusted the IACV as low as it could go and it still idles at about 1000rpm's, sometimes a bit lower.

I would guess that your idle problems are either a vacuum issue or the IACV going bad.

I will look for this, I have never adjusted this, so I am not quite sure where it is but I will look for it this afternoon.

I am pretty sure I do not have a vacuum leak, the car idles smooth, and does not hesitate at all under throttle. Also, the plenum gasket is brand new.

I will also need to remember to check and make sure my throttle cable is not too tight.

You aren't really supposed to touch that little bump-stop screw for the throttle body. If you have a high idle, you could have:

1. vacuum leak (from a cracked/loose hose or gasket)
2. fast-idle cam is stuck
3. over-tightened throttle cables

Thats all I can think off so far... that little bump-stop screw is actually set from the factory and it explictly states in the FSM that you should not need to adjust that - infact, they use loctite on it (I can see the red sealer on mine).

What about your spark plugs, have you checked them? When I first got my max it would do the same thing. So I went and got my spark plugs changed and my idle dropped to 500rpm.

I don't see how spark plugs would cause such a high idle... my guess is some vacuum line got bumped in just the right way in your particular case (to fix the problem) and it was nothing to do with the plugs.

I dont know alot about the whole idle thing but the only reason I changed my sparks about a year ago was because I read on here that my idle would be lower so I did it and it worked.

cardana24, did your CEL ever come on? I'm not sure of this, but could a leak in a vacuum line cause the IACV to act up?

my cel never comes on , the guy I bought the car from took the bulb out. I put a new one in and it still did not work. I am going to try one more bulb and if that does not work I am just going to get a scanner...I may just get a scanner anyway so I dont have to lay on the floor board of the car anymore.

Pepboys regularly has OBD-II scanners on sale for 70-80bucks... it's worth it, especially since not all cars allow code-reading like some of the Maximas.

Hmm... that sucks. Because I am having the same problem as you, I checked my ECM today and dug up an 0205, which is the IACV. Maybe that's your problem? Good luck.

Yup a bad IACV will do that (its the solenoids that go bad)...

luckly I have another one if that is my problem since I just did a motor swap. If you do need another one talk to Requin6 he is a friend of mine, he has 2 or 3 motors he is parting out in his garage.
