Automagic/tragic Shift Questions

1. Sorry if this is a repost guys, but i was wondering just HOW bad shifting from 1-2-D manually in our cars is. Will it kill the tranny? I know that our engines are indestructable but can the same be said for our trannies? I never try to downshift, but i do like to pretend i have a manual once in a blue moon. this summer = 5speed swap...
2. Does anyone with an auto ever use the TC/overdrive button at highway speeds (turn it off) to engine brake? sometimes i will do this to boost my braking a little bit when i don't want my abs to kick in or if im just lazy.
3. Has anyone ever heard of a 'Shift Kit'? a friend was telling me about it and it really didn't sound right to me. I don't think this kid knows much about cars. I think that the DR mod sounded like a much cheaper alternative.
4. About that mod, and i know there's TONS of opinions out there, but from any professional mechanics or people that have had the DR mod for a long time, DOES IT REALLY KILL YOUR TRANNY? WHAT PROOF DO YOU HAVE THAT IT DOES/DOESN'T?
that's all for now, thanks again for the help guys.

1) Once in a blue moon woun't hurt it. I've never seen a blue moon, so I guess it's gonna be a while before you experiment huh?

2) When you hit that button you unlock the TQ and downshift into 3rd. Just keep that in mind.
It works, I've use the O/D OFF for that purpose, as well as climbing and decending steep inclines.

3) No such thing, & leave the drop resistor alone..

4) See point #3

Shiftinh manually will definitly mess your tranny up, i recently had a thread about this cause i used to do that and my tranny started finding it hard to shift from second to third and sometimes from 1st to 2nd, since i started driving like a normal automatic it been doing better.

In driving school they taught me to shift from D into 2/1 when going down steep/long hills to avoid riding the brakes. I never really thought that would be good for the transmission though.

well the purpose of 1 and 2 is for that reason, hills, slippery surfaces..etc

i mean i launch my car from one and at 2 at times... and i do have a drop resistor mod done with a WOT switch

but hey im now going on to my 3rd tranny so dont fawk with the tranny, just leave it in D and let the car do the driving

if u gonna race and u shift 1-2-D its gonna be a huge advantage, especially if you redline it both times, BUT, the fact remains........ you are messing up your tranny, i learnt that the scary way.

Well, either way if you're flooring it in "D" it should redline, although ur not really benefiting from redlining on USIM. (from wut i understand) i would also like to add to Soniccrunch's statement by sayin they're there for something rite? so he could be correct, but i dont know. i dont think it'll hurt if u do it every once in a while. DR mod doesnt hurt the tranny, if anything it helps reduce slippage. talk to Jime about it, he'll tell u everything u need to know and he'll provide facts n sh*t that probably no one can, lol.

i thought the paintjob on those "sacked-out" emblems was ok and original, but this thread just ruined it. manually shifting 1-2-D in an auto is just as silly as a ricer thinking his vinyl decals will up the hp. just let the auto do its thing, even if it "doesn't hurt" the tranny

ricey enough for you?
and why is it silly? i don't believe nissan would include the '1-2-d' feature in the gearbox, just to be "silly", i think they engineered it for a reason. but i might be wrong, it might just be a prank so people break their transmissions and have to have them replaced.
I had been using 1-2-d feature to race b/c it def is faster, but mostly to work on shifting if i do get a 5speed swap this summer. i know this is a rediculous excuse and i wish i was a 5, but you haters have to admit it: you know you've done it at least once to feel like ur a cool dude with a 5speed. come ooooon you know you have xD

You shouldn't do any damage doing the manual shifting. The automatic shift occurs on most cars approx 6000 rpm so we are only talking about another 4 or 500 rpm by shifting manually. However my fastest and most consistent times have always come from leaving it in Drive and allowing automatic shifts.

i can't believe this garbage, do you even know how to drive a manual? I mean you ever heard of the clutch

i don't see how you could get your kicks out of shifting an automatic transmission, let alone actually feeling like its a 5-speed

My fastest times in my auto was done when not shifting manually. I have other auto maxxes with faster times when shifting though. Whether or not it hurts anyhting or not I dont know but if more than one person tells me it does and I'm going to have to pay $900 for a new transmission if I dont stop then Imma listen.
