Rims as luggage??

Okay so I moved to NC from Utah about four months ago and drove my max out. I pulled my 17"s off and threw on the good ol' steelies. Much smoother ride! Anyways, my 17"s are still in Utah and I am flying back there this week and I had the idea of checking my rims as luggage. Does anyone work for a airline and know if this would be a problem?? My wife and I are flying so I am hoping to get all our stuff in one suitcase and checking 3 rims and paying for one. Any ideas?

Two pieces of luggage per person plus a carry on and the weight, I believe, is 55lbs per piece of luggage

luggage can be anything as long as it wont damage the machinery. I suggest you bubble wrap the rims then put them in a nylon laundry bag. Then it's definitely luggage

This is great news. Now I just have to find boxes big enough to fit rims and tires. Do you think I will need to adjust the air pressure??

yeah but each wheel with tire weighs 45-50 pounds... eh i guess it might work... baggage handlers might get pissed and "loose your baggage"
