5-spd auto shifter kick-back
5-spd auto shifter kick-back
Speaking about shifters, the shift **** thread prompted me to inquire about anyone else that has felt a slight kick in the shifter when accellerating and decellerating and you are resting your hand on the ****. It is only there right at about 3-5mph either way and is there whether in D or in Manu-matic mode. Been meaning to take it in to the dealer to have that looked at along with a couple of other minor issues but you know, work and life always somehow get in the way. You can even hear it move the shifter if there is no outside noise and the radio and air is off. Anyway, just wanted to know if anyone else has noticed this (or maybe you will now pay attention to this the next time you drive the Max

Hey, just to let you know, I've felt that same sensation too. It has only happened to me in the manual mode a couple of times. However, I've never felt it in regular auto mode. It has occurred on a couple of occasions when I've tried to kick it back down to first when I'm going a little too fast for first. I think it is the transmission trying to adjust, but I'm not sure. It happens very rarely because I don't use the manual mode that much and because I learned after the first time or two to just let the car slow down signficantly before putting it back into first. I'm not sure if that's the same thing you are talking about, but maybe you should get it checked out if it is bothering you. Good Luck!!! PEACE OUT.......

I hold my shiftknob all the time also, never felt it, thank goodness for the placement though, as a guy if it wasn't there, I know what I would be holding instead!
I believe you may be feeling the auto transmission lock pin going into place. When you come to a complete stop, there is an electronic actuator that unlocks the shift lever so that you may shift into reverse. It tends to unlock right before the car comes to a stop (still moving but barely).
When you start to roll again, it locks to keep you from being able to shift into reverse while you are driving forward (did that on an IROC Z in the eighties...ouch!).
You will be able to feel and hear a small "ping" or a "click" when the device locks or unlocks...I am not sure how much kickback you are feeling. Maybe this is it?
Good luck!

man i woudn't recommend downshifting into first ever, let the car do it itself. the only time I downshift is from 4th to 3rd @ 80 when racing or so. under that I let the car work it out..
5th to 4th above 80 also. never to 2nd or 1st..
Well, since you recommended it 'Niq, then it's got to be the the GOLDEN RULE!!!!!
You're saying you shouldn't shift it down to 2nd or 1st ever????? Never heard that one, it must be in the GOLDEN RULE BOOK that none of us have ever seen....
Just to confirm your proposition, I called the dealership and asked a mechanic and a salesman and they both laughed at that claim. I have to admit man, some of your advice is a little questionable. LOL. PEACE OUT................

I guess the answer is some have it and some don't. factorymax, never knew there was a device to prevent shifting into reverse. Is it supposed to lock it in D or manu-matic mode or just prevent you from shifting into reverse? I know you can still move the shifter into N while moving but am not brave (stupid
) enough to try to shift into R while moving forward. Well, for those of you that do have this symptom, anyone take it in to have it looked at to see if it needs some kind of adjustment? Doesn't seem to affect performance but concerned enough about a part of the car that is complicated enough as it is without having to worry about it making funky noises/movements.
