My car is shutting off and stalling- need help.

Sorry if this a repost. My 99 max with 72k, is shutting off when I am stopped in Drive or slowing down, or when I shift to reverse. I know I am not the only one with this problem, but I don't want to get ripped off fixing it. What can be done, or what do you think is causing this?

If your "check engine" or "service engine" light is on, start by running the trouble codes.

check the condition for your crank positioning sensor, it's next to oil pan, clean it and see if the problem continues, i used to have the same problem

Alternator

It may be the alternator going bad, not to sure though.

My car stalled at a red light the day before my alternator went out.

you can have codes without the CEL on... for example knock sensor 0304 is a ghost code, it is stored in the ECU when you check it but it doesnt trigger the CEL.

it only takes a few minutes to check, why beat around the bush when the car might tell you the exact problem right away.

getting the code:

understanding what it means:
http://vbxmaxima.8m.com/ecudecoder.html
or the stickies

This used to happen to me a lot, especially when I was In California. I would suggest checking your air filter for dirt, and clean out as much of the TB and Intake manifold as possible. 72K should have left a lot of black residue inside the TB. This should help you a lot. If not, at least your throttle will be smoother. This will take an hour to do, and its easy. Use TB or some type of degreaser spray.

does it idle fine? If you bought the car used, make sure there is a CEL bulb. Mine did not, the scum bag took it out before selling it.

Wiggle the connector (plug/socket) to the MAF sensor. If the idle rpms jump, that's probably what's causing the trouble.

Does your car do this only when it's cold? If there are no codes and all the usual stuff checks out, it may be your transmission.

i know what the problem is im serious

my sisters 95 just had that, so they said we will fix it
and worked and worked on it. got fuel injector cleaners and everythin and still little after it would do it now and then, my father found out it was the air mass sensor, start your car and have some one hit ur air mass sensor and see if it stalls out u need a new one.

I had similar problems with stalling and what not at a stop or coming to a stop. The ecu did not throw any codes. I "think" it was due to me not properly drying my cone air filter, and the oil probably caked on the sensor overtime. I was fortunate to have another org member with a 4th gen to work on same shift, so we swapped, he stalled a few times, and I found my problem. I am borrowing another org members maf for the meantime until I can find a decent one at a junkyard. Good thing for me I only replaced fuel filter and ran dry gas, and a bottle of fuel injection cleaner.

It's the MAF!

Same symptoms happened to me as well... replaced everything except the MAF. Turned out to be the MAF
