Wierd braking noise- please help!

I was driving my maxima the other day and when i hit the brake petal, there is a popping noise. it starts off somewhat quite but the more you push the petal, the louder it is. i was wondering if anyone has ever had this happen, and if soo how did you fix it. hopefully it doesnt cost alot.
any advice would be great

Are you sure what your hearing isn't the ABS kicking in? Cuz I freaked the first time I heard mine since I've never had a car with ABS before.
