All OBDII cars from 96 up store data at the time of the problem. So lets say you get a check engine light at 70MPH on the highway, the ECU records freeze frame data for that moment for all the sensors. Then us technicians look at the data and decipher what exacly caused the light to come on. These usually are used for hard to diagnose- intermitent problems. Good scan tool is able to record few min worth of data from a SET point, or it can trigger a recording of all the live data when the check engine light comes on. You can reply the snap shot on the scanner for the given time and watch all the sensor values change, and usually pick up a glitch by doing so. Its like watching a movie of all your sensors working. I'm not so sure what is so special bout the 6th gen Maxima, nor do I care- I hate every Nissan nowadays, but their trucks and Infinitis.

Good info BlackBIRDVQ, sounds like you've done that a few times.

Care to explain why you hate nissans these days? (call it morbid curiousity)

VK45DE engine in all the Infiniti cars- FX45,Q45, M45 has oil burning issues due to faulty piston rings.
VQ35DE- engine that powers 90% of Nissans cars on the road has the same problem with piston rings.

Loose piston rings have less friction that robs HP, but at the same time the engine is more prone to burning oil with some miles on it.

Nissan cars all look the same, all of them are really cheap... I wouldn't buy anything new anyways, save for maybe a few cars- all that I could count with one hand. My Maxima has 140K miles on it, runs great... and it will have 300K miles by the time its 10 years old. I have very little doubt that THE engine in my car will not last 300-400K miles.
