Air Tornado actually helps gas mileage?
Air Tornado actually helps gas mileage?
I am watching Two Guys Garage on Speedvision and they are installing an Air Tornado. They said it has been proven that spinning the air helps gas mileage. Also said that Mercedes does something similar as well as ford with the new 5.4 Liter GT. Anyone had experience with it?

Unreal.....
Think about it, really.. The tornado sits in front of the throttle plate. So the air passes over the tornado, then through the small open crack in the throttle plate under normal crusing conditions, down the length of your intake runners, into your intake manifold where finally some fuel is injected just as the intake valve opens up.
Do you honestly think that air is spinning after it passes through all that crap?
Where is the common sense here.....
The only application I can actually see that device working is in a carburated engine. Put that thing right over the top of a carburator and I can see it's benifits as it mixes the air and fuel better.

I saw it too. Just because it was on TV, doesn't mean it's real. Remember the Bush national gaurd crap before the election? No, well what about the WV miners a couple of weeks ago. They were all alive according the the news...

Tornado DOES sponsor the show. I wondered if they were going to do an episode on it.
My experience in the old Buick: codes were thrown immediately. Later found my my O2 sensor blew. Can't say if related, but was enough for me to return it.

I also lost all respect for that show. In fact, about a year ago, I made a similiar thread ranting about how money can get you anywhere. I saw that/those episodes where they praise the Tornado and couldn't believe my eyes.

you can actually make a better one that. just put some small fins(aka vortex stimulators) in the begining of your intake pipe. Im not sure if your gonna gain any gas from it though.

lol

I'm thinking of a real tornado if you know what I mean.
In an issue of Popular Mechanics, they were testing fuel improvers on a dyno and all of them either did nothing or resulted in worse mileage. IIRC the tornado actually worstened gas mileage. Test vehicle was a 2005 Ford Fseries i believe.

....ever heard of advertising? Don't buy it, huge waste of money.
I too had the Tornado in my car, and it actually did work, but I took it off because rattle little bit while driving....Real talk, it really does work, try it if you don't believe me. The choice is yours......
I think the spinning of air that mercedes and such car makers are doing is to the air right before it goes into the piston, that way it mixes with the fuel much better, not at all like the air tornado.
If you look at web pages relating to fluid dynamics, they will all tell you the same thing: Maximum air flow is attained with air travelling as straight as possible, free of turns it has to make or other obstructions. With that tornado thing, it causes eddies and erratic airflow, thus reducing total flow as kinetic energy normally used to move the air is converted into heat (and sound) by friction between the air molecules.
You get more power if you increase the turbulance in the combustion chamber, but around the intake part, the smoother and straighter the air flow the better.

. Waste of money for little or no gain
