how do you know if your car is equipped with HLSD? I have a 2002 Se maxima..is it written under the hood or somewhere on the car.
might be a horrible question, but can you add it too?

 

yes you can add HLSD if your car has an open diff

pop open your hood...there is a silver metal plate on your firewall...it will say ENGINE VQ35DE....then below it is the transmission code....at the end of the code, if it says A, then its an open diff....if it says H then its a locking diff (HLSD)

 

Another way of checking without poping the hood is looking at your pedals since your car is a 6spd. If they look like this:



then you have HLSD. If they look different then you don't.

only option on 02-03 only. I think the 01 AE had LSD as standard equipment on 5 speeds. And i think its found in the same manner, under the hood

That's right, and I believe the 5th Gen VLSD transaxle code ends in "V" and open still ends in "A".

 

That depends.... some people without HLSD buy those OEM pedals and install em, so if the car has been bought used, I'd still say to check the transaxle code or call Nissan with the VIN to check what options it came out of the factory with.

That being said, Mass Media, have you ever jacked the front up and spun one wheel? On HLSD equipped cars, when you spin on wheel, the other is supposed to spin in the opposite direction. I have a transaxle code ending in "H" and I called Nissan to verify that I have HLSD but don't recall mine ever doing that when I spin the wheels.

 

Auto don't have HLSD. Some have traction control......

 

ummm....I have never tried doing that I might try that next time i have the car jacked up. I do know that i have HLSD, for 1 this snow season i haven't gotten stuck (did with my gold car)

2 In my gold car when i pulled out of my parking lot i could turn the wheel to the right, floor it and smoke my passenger side up. Now when i try it both tires smoke up, and my whole front end kind of slides.

 

have you tried looking under your engine bay?

it's highly unlikely that someone would swap the firewall plate...

 

No then if im wrong i would have another reason to sell my car

Stiffer springs and/or motor mounts might help a bit too

glad you did. its the opposite though, on cars with locked differentials, spinning one tire in the air will make the other tire spin the same direction.

 

Yeah, I mean regardless, I just wanted to clear up the myth that putting the front wheels in the air and spinning them can tell you whether it has HLSD or not. In the case of the 5.5 HLSD, it doesn't. I was a little concerned when mine didn't move either way while spinning one tire, which is what led me to dig deeper. My transaxle code and VIN both tell me that I have HLSD, but I just wanted to make sure.

 

what your transaxle code? the actual #'s. gettin a new trans and want to see if its HLSD

Yeah, that is the code stamped on the plate on the firewall, I doubt its on the differential itself.

 

will a viscous unit spin in the same direction if its in the air?

 

it should. the difference (i think) between viscous and helical is the actual gear type. helical gears are slant cut for more surface area and to be stronger just like a reverse gear and i guess viscous is different.
